After the Fourth Great Shinobi World War ended, the world was experiencing a time of peace. The villages for once were able to live in relative harmony with one another as they rebuilt, and for once, all seemed to be well. The kage were able to live peaceful lives and soon began retiring, passing on the baton to the next generations. That is until an unknown virus infects the northern coast. The first to fall is the once powerful Raikage, Ay. While many thought this virus was a simple mutation of what may have well been the flu, no one would ever think of the destruction it would cause. Especially when it infected a certain Uzumaki Naruto.
With his death came the malice; with the malice came the destruction; with the destruction came the shinobi' revolt; and with the revolt came the sacrifices. The Bijuu became filled with malice that they sought to destroy the world. Shinobi sought a way to fight them and once again capture each of the Bijuu. Time passed, and a plan was devised. The Jinchuuriki would be sacrificed for the greater good of the world, and with the deaths of nine individuals, an uneasy peace began.
As time continued, the villages began to truly restructure. In a peace that would last 80 years after the downfall of the Bijuu, the world would see the creation of a great many things. Technology was beginning to take root and before long the blossoms that grew from the tree of the advanced mind would bear fruit. A many great things came to be. A railroad between the vast many nations. Mechanical limbs to replace lost ones. Radios that could reach between villages. Everything seemed to be becoming less reliant on the shinobi. Only the need for them never truly vanished. As with the growth of time, also continued the growth of malice.

Kazuko is of average stature (5'6"), weight (129 lbs), and bust. Her only distinguishing feature is her bright red hair, which is mostly straight and hangs down several inches below her shoulders. Her remaining eye is a bright clear blue; the other is covered with an eye patch so she doesn't scare small children with an empty eye socket. Her body is toned, but not overly muscular, and she does her best to keep out of the sun, as difficult as that is being that she's from the desert village, and therefore has only a light tan.
Her style of clothing varies greatly depending on what she's doing and how she's feeling. If she's on a mission she wears standard-issue gear; if she's guarding the gate as she usually does, she wears light, colorful clothing and her favorite hat. She doesn't tend to wear dark colors, preferring whites, reds, and sometimes browns, and wears sleeveless tops and shorts whenever she can.
Her headband is most often tied around her neck, and she wears two gear pouches, one on each hip, between which her tools and other items are split.
Kazuko isn't the type of person you would expect to do well as a shinobi. She doesn't have much motivation to get things done and would rather be lazy or creative than work hard. As a genin she was known to shirk the duties she found boring and spend time sleeping instead. She was dead last in her class at the academy and just barely managed to pass, and hasn't put much more work into anything since.
Kazuko is a very laid back, relaxed person who would much rather have friends than enemies. She's not all that enthused about fighting and would prefer that everybody just peace out and be nice, which can lead to some grumbling and annoyance if she butts heads with someone who holds the opposite opinion. However, it's extremely rare that she'll actually get angry enough that it shows.
She's really not cut out for high-stress situations such as higher ranked missions, that being the reason she eagerly volunteered to guard the village gate - something a lot of shinobi consider one of the most boring jobs - instead of joining an operations team and working towards Jōnin. Kazuko would happily remain a Chūnin for the rest of her life, she doesn't want the pressure or publicity that being a Jōnin brings. And despite the fact that it can be boring sometimes (okay, most of the time) she loves her position and wouldn't trade it for the world.
She loves being around people in social situations, and if she wasn't so lazy and informal would probably make a decent diplomat. One of her dreams for the future is to have a child or two, but she's not too keen on the romance; she's social, but doesn't particularly enjoy getting close to people.
Anzai Sadao and Kimura Mai have been friends since their first day at the shinobi academy. They were practically inseparable through their youth - placed on the same genin squad and being promoted to Chūnin at the same time. So of course it wasn't surprising when they eventually got married and decided to have a child - their friends had been expecting it for years, and even those that didn't know them personally knew they never went anywhere without each other.
Shortly after their marriage, Sadao was forced to retire due to injuries sustained in battle. Instead of remaining idle, he opened up a weapons shop using the blacksmithing knowledge passed on by his father. Mai continued as a shinobi, taking maternity leave for the shortest period of time she could, leaving Sadao on his own to raise their daughter. Unfortunately, Mai was killed in action on a dangerous mission shortly after receiving her promotion to Jōnin, leaving her husband a widower.
Despite claiming that he had no paternal instincts, Sadao quickly learned how to manage as a single parent, and raised his daughter the way he thought Mai would have wanted him to. Kazuko didn't quite turn out the way he planned, though. Even as a young child, she was difficult to motivate and often told her father that she didn't want to do whatever it was he wanted her to do. She was a problem child, albeit in different ways than most.
He was ashamed to admit how relieved he was when she entered the academy - now he had even more time in the day to devote to his true passion - blacksmithing. Of course, he helped Kazuko with her homework (or rather, tried to get her to bother with it at all), answered her questions, strived to be involved in her life as much as possible - but the fact was, he was bad at it, and she didn't seem to want him around as much once she'd begun making friends. In fact, she developed a bad habit of going home with her friends and not telling him. She was worth a heart attack and a half on her best behavior. Looking at her now, Sadao is constantly surprised by how responsible she usually is.
Her academy years were pretty uneventful, if you don't count all the detentions for not doing homework or class work, sleeping in class, using equipment properly... frankly, it's sort of a miracle that she graduated at all.
Her genin teammates weren't too thrilled about having the dead last on their team. They quickly found out, though, that when set to a task she found meaningful - unlike homework papers - she got herself motivated and did what needed to be done. Of course, she got a fair few beatings out of her more aggressive teammate for her habit of disappearing whenever the team had to do some of the worse D-Rank missions.
The team's first C-Rank mission was to deliver several documents to a businessman that lived outside of Kaze no Kuni. They had no reason to believe that they would get into any trouble they couldn't handle - bandits were just about all you would find on a C-Rank, and even if the genin weren't quite able to put them down, they'd be able to hold 'em off until their sensei dispatched them.
Well, it's all fun and games until somebody loses an eye. Quite literally. Kazuko being oblivious to her surroundings, one of the bandits managed to sneak up on her. By the time she discovered him, he was already attacking, and ended up taking her eye out with a kunai.
The bandits were dispatched with much haste, and the team's sensei did a rough patch-up of Kazuko's wound so she'd stop bleeding everywhere, and they completed the mission and headed back to Sunagakure as fast as possible. As Kazuko had expected, the damage was irreparable, and she'd be without half of her sight for the rest of her life.
After that she was a lot more wary. Her sensei kept the team in the village for a long time after that, afraid to rush the girl into something she wasn't ready for. She spent almost all of the extra time she had training, honing her hearing and sensory ability so she'd still be able to function properly. Although she might not be the most motivated of shinobi, Kazuko was happy to be one and didn't want to let an injury hold her back or prevent her from going into the field and being able to serve her kage.
After that incident, it took five and a half years for her to work up the motivation to take the Chūnin exams, which were held in a foreign village that particular year. Lacking her original teammates, who had already passed and left her far behind, she took the test with a couple of fresher genin. They tended to look to her for advice, being that she was a fair bit older than they, and with her uncertain guidance they made it through the team portions.
When the time came to impress everyone with a magnificent display of her battle skills, well... Let's just say that, to this day, Kazuko isn't quite sure how she became a Chūnin.
She asked to be put in a position inside the village if possible, and was assigned to guard the gate, a duty she was more than happy to carry out. Despite how boring it can be, Kazuko enjoys her position because it can be pretty relaxing to just chill at the gate and watch the sky and not have to do overmuch work.
As of the present, she doesn't see herself wanting to move on to an operations team or take the Jōnin exam. She's quite content where she is.

Enhanced Chakra Control Kazuko has a smaller chakra pool than the average shinobi, and to make up for that she improved her chakra control immensely in her training to the point where it's on par with that of the average Jōnin, if not a little higher.
Sensor Shinobi After the loss of her left eye, Kazuko compensated for her reduced eyesight by learning how to sense her surroundings with chakra. The ability has been very well developed over time; though it's not yet perfect, with a few more years of training it very well might be. Her ability to sense chakra extends for about five hundred meters, and at the furthest range she can only make out the fact that there is chakra, not whether it's human or animal or any other details. At a closer range - around three hundred meters and less - she can discover the details if she concentrates. For those within a hundred meters, she is easily able to distinguish the element of the chakra, whether it belongs to a person or an animal, etc. She can identify some of the shinobi of Sunagakure based on their chakra signature - those she knows well or encounters often.
Enhanced Hearing With the partial loss of her sight, Kazuko's other senses naturally sharpened; her hearing, in particular, increased greatly with the aid of a little training. Enhanced hearing combined with her trained sensory abilities make it difficult for all but very skilled shinobi to go undetected for very long in her presence. Range of approximately twenty meters.

“bright orange hair”
Us in the modern world refer to this hair color as “red” or “ginger.” It sounds nicer than ORANGE.

“not have to do overmuch work.”
I have learned that “overmuch” is a word.
