After the Fourth Great Shinobi World War ended, the world was experiencing a time of peace. The villages for once were able to live in relative harmony with one another as they rebuilt, and for once, all seemed to be well. The kage were able to live peaceful lives and soon began retiring, passing on the baton to the next generations. That is until an unknown virus infects the northern coast. The first to fall is the once powerful Raikage, Ay. While many thought this virus was a simple mutation of what may have well been the flu, no one would ever think of the destruction it would cause. Especially when it infected a certain Uzumaki Naruto.
With his death came the malice; with the malice came the destruction; with the destruction came the shinobi' revolt; and with the revolt came the sacrifices. The Bijuu became filled with malice that they sought to destroy the world. Shinobi sought a way to fight them and once again capture each of the Bijuu. Time passed, and a plan was devised. The Jinchuuriki would be sacrificed for the greater good of the world, and with the deaths of nine individuals, an uneasy peace began.
As time continued, the villages began to truly restructure. In a peace that would last 80 years after the downfall of the Bijuu, the world would see the creation of a great many things. Technology was beginning to take root and before long the blossoms that grew from the tree of the advanced mind would bear fruit. A many great things came to be. A railroad between the vast many nations. Mechanical limbs to replace lost ones. Radios that could reach between villages. Everything seemed to be becoming less reliant on the shinobi. Only the need for them never truly vanished. As with the growth of time, also continued the growth of malice.
The woman saw the excitement in his eyes and was momentarily puzzled, just shrugging it off as an odd shinobi quirk she hadn't encountered before.
Reina couldn't resist giggling at the confusion written all over his face. Lord, he was so used to violence that he was upset that she hadn't broken bones. This was definitely something new to the woman. "Why shouldn't I be? I was raised nice, and life showed me that being nice to others results in more happiness for everybody. And I really didn't want to lay you up in the local hospital; it ain't all that fantastic."
Without another word, the woman dragged him over to where his food sat, untouched - well, maybe there were some shards of the bar on it, but he could pick those off. "Now eat. If you really want a fight I'll give you one, but get some damn food in your skinny body."
Sato felt himself nearly slip into a trance after hearing her answer, his expression bleak and confused. Her words were alien to the rogue, and the explanation they carried failing to do someone with an upbringing such as his any justice in having relevance in his life. Being nice for the sake of being nice. No facade. No personal gain. That just wasn't possible.
The man remained silent as he was led back to his seat, blank eyes resting upon the piles of food that he had denied minutes ago. For some reason, it all looked quite appetizing, though that may have been the adrenaline in his system having worn off. Even holding his chop sticks felt odd; there was usually a defensive sense of insecurity about everything he did, and involving everything he ate.
Now, it felt like he was purposely letting his guard down.
But there was no danger. No matter how sharp his senses, no matter how strong his instincts, he could not anticipate any form of true killing intent from the woman. She was just...kindness. Not kind, but simply the embodiment of it.
He was stirred back into reality upon her final comment, mentioning a fight after his meal. And though it was not her first time, the words of his litheness finally seemed to get to the rogue, a soft pout begining to form over his face.
"I'm not that skinny..." he murmured. Color would ever so lightly grace his cheeks, though it was quick to fade. It wasn't easy to maintain good health on the run, nor did the rogue run into people willing to hand out entire bounties of meals to strangers for free.
Though that brought back to light the issue that started this quarrel between the two; there was no way in hell that even Sato, as ravenous as he was, could eat the entire platter of plates the woman gave to him.
Glancing up sheepishly for but a moment, before returning to eat slowly at the grilled fish. It was colder than it seemed when it was first brought out, but mouthwatering flavor made up for the time it had sat out without being tasted.
"I can't finish all of this by myself. You eat it too."
It wasn't as if he truly needed her help, though. Obviously, someone as strong willed as Sato could finish the meal if he pushed himself to the task. There was just...the risk of poison. Indeed. And if this meal was poisonous, she would have to eat it as well.
He wanted her to eat poison. Not share a meal with him.
Reina came out and dragged a stool up next to him, probably in what he considered his personal space, but she didn't give a good goddamn. She leaned on the bar and watched him pick at the food, rolling her eyes. "You are too. Shut up and eat."
Idly, she reached out and ran her fingers through his messy hair, tracing the outline of his face down to his jawbone. Partly because she wanted him to react; partly because she thought he had a nice face, even with the scar that marred it. She wondered where it had come from. Scars told stories, and the pinkette imagined that this man had quite a lot of stories. "I never did ask. What's your name?"
Oh come on, she thought when he spoke again. What did he think she was doing, poisoning him? She picked up a piece of tempura and popped it into her mouth, chewing slowly and swallowing, eyes on him. Reina would never serve food that was anything less than perfect. In her apron, she had extra pairs of chopsticks, and pulled one set out to pick at the fish, taking a bite of that too. Somebody had major trust issues, although she probably couldn't blame him.
Sato smirked at the woman's comment, continuing to dig into his meal. He had to admit, splinters aside, the rice was still quite good. It was surprising to see that the man still had such a palette for cuisine, given his usual diet consisting of whatever was nearby and edible. The rogue had thought that at this point, food would just be food to him. Weird.
He couldn't help but wonder what else he kept since then.
A noticeable flinch shook the man's body when the woman's touch graced him, the hand without eating utensils rising from the table in instinctive defense. However, with a firm and determinant blink of his eyes along with a uncertian shiver, he eased himself back into enjoying his meal. Her touch would comb through his hair, gently guiding her fingertips down the edge of his face, and even over the notches of his scar. When they weren't prying at his neck, the woman's fingers were very gentle. He hadn't known another person's touch that wasn't out to harm or kill him.
It was actually really relaxing, returning a red hue to his skin.
She imposed a daring question to the rogue, one that was often asked, but seldom answered. What was his name? Such information was crucial to his well being, and to risk that by giving it away was a proverbial beacon placed upon the road map the Kirigakure ANBU was certain to be conceiving for their missing-nin. He would know the sheer severity of a criminal revealing his name, having been an exploiter of such valuable information in the past.
And yet...
"Sato," he answered, feeling as if a boulder had slipped from his shoulders. "My name is Sato."
How long had it been since he spoke of his own name? Was he certain that it was even the right one? Of course it was; those that he had encountered called him by it, after all. It was simply a relief, however, to be reminded of who he is without potential death being the questioner.
The rogue turned to face her slightly, his eyes mostly watching just how exactly she ate her food. Her form seemed more proper, more civilized, compared to his barbaric snagging and spearing of their meal.
"You know mine now. Can I know yours?"
A chunk of fish, one possessing more than a few bones, would be plopped into Sato's fanged maw.
Reina had to admit, she was sure getting a kick out of making him uncomfortable. He was a jumpy little thing, that was for sure. The smile on her lips was genuine as she toyed with his hair and generally touched him in ways he probably didn't appreciate, from the way he'd flinched. Aww, he was blushing. Cute.
"Well, it's nice to meet you, Sato-chan," she murmured between small, neat bites of fish and rice. And really, it was; Reina enjoyed meeting new people, even if they were stubborn, ungrateful, and disrespectful, and had to nearly get bones broken before he would sit down and eat his food (like a more dangerous overgrown toddler, really).
The pinkette leaned against the counter, tapping the wood with her fingernails. "Adachi Reina. You can call me Reina-san, if you'd like."
Reina-san. It was a simple name, nothing too complicated or elegant, but its lack of either made it easy to remember. To someone like Sato, it was a good name. Besides, it wasn't often that the rogue would take time to remember another person's name; he could hardly remember his own at times.
Reina, the woman of an impossible heart of kindne-...wait.
The Hozuki would mentally back track through her words, returning to her speaking of his own. Specifically, it was the way she worded his honorific: Sato-chan.
Sato-chan!?
"Oi!" he snapped, squinting his eyes at his overly generous acquaintance. "It's Sato-san to you. I'm pretty sure I'm older than you anyway, kid." His temporary outburst had nearly made the man forget that she had just told him her name, forcing his eyes to glance away sheepishly. "Er, Reina-san."
He would huff and return to his meal, shoveling a spoonful of miso into his gullet in a fit of frustration. Who calls a guy like him a -chan? Didn't she know how to talk to people properly? The only people you'd ever call by such a thing were kids, cute people, girls, and...
Wait. Did she think he was cute?
Sato had to pinch his eyes shut to keep his face from further burning, though the steam of the soup would help hide the true nature of his reddening skin. Idiot! Why would she think something like that about him? Sato wasn't cute! He was a dangerous criminal, one who had knives in hidden away, one who killed people for a living even before he had become a vigilante.
Someone like Sato wasn't cute. He was dangerous and scary!
A single brow arched as she watched him, lips twitching in amusement. "Sato-chan," she repeated teasingly, biting back an undignified giggle. "I'm twenty-six. I'm not exactly a child." And at the moment she was certainly being more mature than he was, not that she was going to point that out to someone who seemed so temperamental. "Mm. Although, you could call me Reina-chan, if you'd like."
Was she flirting with him in her own, reserved way? Yes. Absolutely. It wasn't something she did often, so she wasn't really aware of how people usually flirted; she tended to go for mostly-subtle little things, like using specific honorifics. Which he hadn't really seemed to appreciate, come to think of it. A soft smile graced her smooth face as she watched him eat, the blush on his face rather endearing.
"Come on, Sato-chan... No need to pout." Reina moved closer to him, leaning slightly against him.
She had to have been doing all of this on purpose. Even if it was ever so slight, her presence's close proximity to his own was enough to put the man further on his edge. The woman was kind, this was true, but now she was being straight-up flirty. Was she trying to seduce him or something like that?
Get him to lower his guard...strike him when vulnerable...
Or maybe she was just weird and was attracted to him. And it wasn't as if there wasn't some magnetic force that eased the rogue into accepting her physical form of comfort, but years of conditioning to react accordingly for the worst possible outcome had natured Sato into something ill-fit to instinctively accept this kind of treatment.
Then again, he still carried with him the instincts of a man.
A warmth embedded itself into his pale flesh, its heat radiating from the softness of her weight. He hadn't known such a feeling since he was at his youngest, before his mother had abandoned Sato and his father. Even now, it felt as if it were the first time a comforting touch had graced his body, stirring an uncertain excitement within his gut.
"So, Reina-chan? Hmm..." Sato averted his eyes, keeping them fixated away from the woman as he ate. It was truly then that the rogue had realized he and Reina were practically the only people left in the restaurant. He could only hear the sound of his own eating. The two of them were alone.
Something told the Hozuki that this was leading somewhere.
"You're warm," the man mumbled, his words more a passive growl than endearing. It was a strange feeling, after all.
Instincts warred against his training. He was suspicious of her, yet he did not push her away. He seemed uncomfortable, but he was blushing like there were thoughts in his head he wouldn't want to admit to in public. Reina thought his reaction was downright adorable. She didn't know if this was really going to go anywhere, but she had to try, right?
She was more than ready to experience something new. All three of her older brothers had kept any man she liked well away from her, as if she couldn't handle the affection of the opposite sex. As if she couldn't take care of herself. She'd snuck around with girls instead - and, in fact, was more attracted to women than men, although as one might see, that didn't mean she thought men were unattractive - but she had never done anything the least bit sexual with a man. And dammit, she wanted to.
"Mhm." The woman wiggled her way under his arm and leaned her body against him, an arm going around his back. His arm was draped across her neck, and hopefully, he would leave it there.
And now this was happening. Wait, what was happening, exactly? Whatever it was, this didn't feel like an ideal time for any of the sort. Then again, it's not like he had experience with anything of this nature. What did he know?
Though this realization did little to soothe his edged nerves.
"What...are you doing?" Sato would finally ask, feeling the pink-haired person pop her head from underneath his arm. There has hospitality in her actions, but this was something different. This was just being affectionate. And maybe more?
Her half-hugging arm would make the rogue jump, his words skipping a beat.
Reina looked up at him, brow quirked. "You said I was warm. I'm lending you more of my body heat," she answered. "It just so happens that snuggling up close is the best way to do so, Sato-chan."
From the way he was reacting, she couldn't imagine he had very much more experience than she did, if he had any at all. She rested her head against his chest. "Shut up and finish eating."
Sato's eye twitched. Right. That was everything she wanted to do. That was why she was doing all of this. For his sake.
Well, hospitality or not, it certainly made eating harder.
"You shut up..." he mumbled, returning to his meal.
He would continue to eat, even with the woman leaning firmly against--and now into--his body. Rice went down easy with the remaining broth, meat was gnashed between sharpened teeth, and in due time, the remnants of his bountiful meal would be reduced to drops and scraps of food.
It was the first time in years that Sato could say he felt full.
An exhausted sigh would leave the man's jagged maw, a soft belch rumbling his gullet. He had to admit, despite the violent display that ever-so-excited him she administered, Reina was quite the hostess. A good meal, a somewhat confusing but comforting companion; what else was the woman capable of.
He would look down at the woman, who seemed quite content with resting against his worn body. A timid hand, now free of its eating utensils, would rest atop her pink head, uncertain of just how to approach her in such a position.
"That wasn't half bad," he said with a smirk, slowing bringing his lids shut for a somber blink. Now that he had finished his meal, it seemed there wasn't much more of a reason to stay; she more than likely would be ready for the rowdy rogue to leave, after all.
"I guess I should get going," he sighed, though not before finishing with a quip. "Unless you've got anything else I have to taste."
She nuzzled into him when his hand rested on her hair, a smile on her face. When he announced his intention to leave, Reina sat up straight again, looking into his eyes. "As a matter of fact, I just might," she murmured in response to his quip.
The woman then pulled him close and kissed him on the lips, sending a tingle through her own body. He was rough, compared to her softness; she cupped his face in her hands and pulled him even closer, eyes fluttering shut. After a long moment, she released him, biting her bottom lip. Holy hell had she actually just done that. She had always been the proper one, the good girl... Not the girl that went around kissing strangers at the bar at night. But what the hell, she deserved to live a little.
"Now, are you going to come upstairs with me, or are you going to keep running away, Sato-chan?"
Of all the things she had done to him tonight, this was certainly the least suspected among all of them.
In truth, Sato could not recall a time he had ever kissed a person, nor could he remember when he had ever received one. He never expected that his first would be from a practical stranger, not to mention from the oddest stranger he had ever met. Sato was not one to seek such simple pleasures in life, inactive in any pursuit of discarding such things as his carnal purity.
Then again, it wasn't as if he was opposed to any of it.
Before he could immerse himself in their oral exchange, the kiss had ended. However, something in Reina's expression told the rogue it would not be the last kiss she had in store for him. Sato couldn't help but gulp, taken aback by it all.
"I'll go," he answered almost instinctively, realizing the weight of his words just moments after they escaped his lips. What would happen was something Sato had no skill in, and what would follow after was uncertain; both were things that should have put the rogue on edge, out of his element, and yet he felt anything but desire.
His sharpened teeth clacked softly as his checkered eyes stared longingly into the woman's. They were hungry for a meat he had yet to taste, though he would not wish to bite into this new meal too hard.
Reina stood and took his hand, pulling him through the door into the kitchen. Tucked away at the far side was a set of stairs that led to the upper level, where the woman made her home. It was fairly sizable, and her bed was most certainly big enough for two. She didn't waste words explaining where she was taking him; if he had a brain in that head of his, he would figure it out.
Of course, she didn't have a clue what she was doing once they were past the kissing part. So, to put off that problem for a little while longer, she pushed him down onto her plush covers and kissed him again, unbuttoning her chef's jacket and tossing it carelessly aside.
Reina hoped he had a clue what he was doing. Even if it were only a single clue.
