After the Fourth Great Shinobi World War ended, the world was experiencing a time of peace. The villages for once were able to live in relative harmony with one another as they rebuilt, and for once, all seemed to be well. The kage were able to live peaceful lives and soon began retiring, passing on the baton to the next generations. That is until an unknown virus infects the northern coast. The first to fall is the once powerful Raikage, Ay. While many thought this virus was a simple mutation of what may have well been the flu, no one would ever think of the destruction it would cause. Especially when it infected a certain Uzumaki Naruto.
With his death came the malice; with the malice came the destruction; with the destruction came the shinobi' revolt; and with the revolt came the sacrifices. The Bijuu became filled with malice that they sought to destroy the world. Shinobi sought a way to fight them and once again capture each of the Bijuu. Time passed, and a plan was devised. The Jinchuuriki would be sacrificed for the greater good of the world, and with the deaths of nine individuals, an uneasy peace began.
As time continued, the villages began to truly restructure. In a peace that would last 80 years after the downfall of the Bijuu, the world would see the creation of a great many things. Technology was beginning to take root and before long the blossoms that grew from the tree of the advanced mind would bear fruit. A many great things came to be. A railroad between the vast many nations. Mechanical limbs to replace lost ones. Radios that could reach between villages. Everything seemed to be becoming less reliant on the shinobi. Only the need for them never truly vanished. As with the growth of time, also continued the growth of malice.
"I have no idea what to do when I want to hurt myself. I-I don't know how to stop myself from doing it and it kills me every time, because I'm not just hurting me anymore. I'm hurting her. And I hate that. I-I don't know if you know anything about self-harm, but it kinda... I thought, you're a medic, maybe you've helped someone like me?"
Yuu held the older boy close against him, glad Kaede found Yuu someone worth confiding in even after only meeting once.
“I've helped a couple people. I'll be glad to help you too.” The Kamizuru stroked the soft multicolored hair. “Tell me why you hurt yourself. I understand you started because of your stress with what happened, but... is it stress relief? Does the pain make you feel more grounded? Does it make you feel calmer?”

"It gives me something else to focus on, instead of the pain in here." He tapped his chest in the general area of where his heart was located. "Calms me down when I'm freaking out." Kaede had never said this sort of stuff to anyone before... But he needed help, and knew it, and he was determined to get it from somewhere. He'd rather it be Yuu than some stranger doctor in the mental ward of Amegakure's hospital, or whatever psychiatrist he was supposed to go see but never did.

It was surprisingly easy to admit this to Yuu. If he'd had it his way, Seiya never would have known about it, because even thinking about broaching the topic with her made his heart hurt. Well... if he'd had it his way, he wouldn't be sitting her talking to Yuu in the first place.
"I drink a lot, too. It's a really shitty combination."

“Try drinking coffee instead of alcohol,” came an immediate response to the drinking. Coffee was strong and bitter, and didn't cause impairment. Hell, people with hangovers drink black coffee as a remedy. The cutting however would be a trickier solution.
“Hmmm... I've seen lots of solutions to cutting, but everyone is different. Sometimes taking a red pen and pressing hard across the area you normally cut helps. You can ear a thin rubber band and snap it against your wrist every time you feel the need to hurt yourself. Having a pet or someone close to you you can keep close and cuddle helps with stress-relief too.”

The look on his face was quite indicative of the way Kaede felt about drinking coffee; frankly, he found it kind of disgusting. But hey, if it would help stop him from drowning himself in sake...
He listened to Yuu's suggestions, rolling them over in his mind. "I have always wanted a cat to keep me company..." Yes, he had Seiya, but Seiya had her own house and a life outside of just him, she couldn't be at his side twenty-four seven. A cat, on the other hand, could stay with him all the time. It wasn't like he was going to be taking extended missions outside the village anymore. He hadn't been allowed to return to active duty yet but when he did, he doubted he would still be a member of ANBU. Maybe he could be one of those jounin that did paperwork; less exciting, but also fewer chances to watch the people you care about die while you can do nothing to save them. He'd take that trade any day.
Yuu chuckled at the expression Kaede's face contorted into at the sound of drinking coffee.
"I have always wanted a cat to keep me company... Maybe two cats. Or three. I really like cats."
“Cats are quite nice,” Yuu commented. He had an entirely different reason to say that though, and he was not going to say it aloud. “Definitely look into getting some kittens, just make sure you have someone who can take care of them when you're out on misions.”

"I don't think I'm going to be going on any long missions for the foreseeable future," he informed Yuu, shifting slightly. "They take you out of ANBU when you fuck up and have a breakdown, y'know." ANBU made a lot of shinobi crack; it wasn't intended to be a permanent position, but once you got into the ranks and learned to love it you never wanted to quit. And you didn't, usually, unless the stress got to you. Even then not all that many shinobi went back to their ordinary jobs willingly.
All of Kaede's time as a jounin thus far had been spent in ANBU, so he didn't really have an ordinary job to go back to. He'd just have to figure out something he would like to do and that would allow him ample cat-petting time. He smiled as he thought about filling his lonely house with cats; Seiya could go with him to the pet store and help him pick out his future babies, and they could cat-proof everything, and he'd buy lots of toys... Even just thinking about getting cats was making him happier.

"Trust me, I'm planning on it," Kaede replied, a half-smile on his face. He hadn't liked leaving her in the village to come here, simply because part of him was afraid he'd lose her if she was out of his sight for too long.
"I don't know what to do with myself now, Yuu. Just sitting around my house is driving me crazy, but as a jounin I've never done anything but ANBU. I don't have a different position to return to. I thought I'd be in ANBU for the rest of my life... I haven't a clue what else I could do."

Yuu hummed in thought, thinking of options. He wasn't particularly sure if all villages shared the same systems, but he figured they were similar.
“You could be on the work force as a normal jounin. You could try being a healer, or even a teacher. What kind of work do you like to do?”

Kaede made a face. "Normal. Eww," he joked. Really, there wasn't anything normal about him. Whether that was a good or bad thing, he wasn't quite sure.
"I like danger. I think it likes me a little too much. Might have to break it off," he deadpanned. "I've never even thought about doing anything else... I don't know, maybe I could teach. I've had some pretty awful senseis in my life, maybe I could stop a couple of kids from having the kind of teachers I've had." Kaede pondered this in silence for a few moments. "I don't have a clue what the requirements to be a jounin-sensei are. I.. should probably find out."
Kaede didn't say the next thing that came to his mind, that he probably couldn't be a sensei because who would want him anywhere near their kids. He didn't exactly have the best reputation, and he wasn't close enough to any of the village's other jounin to be a part of their circle of friends. Man, his antisocial tendencies were really fucking him right now, weren't they?
Yuu listened as Kaede spoke about the prospects of becoming a teacher.
“You should try looking into it. It won't be as dangerous as ANBU work I'm sure but... I remember having some pretty exciting experiences with my sensei when I was a genin.”
Yuu rest his chin atop the multi-colored hair. He could never be a teacher. It was cool, yeah, helping someone learn something new. But as a career? It would be overwhelming to the medic.
“Being a teacher is responsibility, too. You'll have subordinates who will look up to you, and it will be your job to shape them into proper shinobi. You'll have to make lesson plans and make sure you teach in a way everyone understands... It's a danger of a different class. Think you're up to the challenge?”

"I prefer not to think about most of my senseis," he murmured dryly, shaking his head. If he did become a sensei, he wouldn't be like them. He'd protect his kids, keep them safe, train them well... The more he thought about the possibilities, the more attractive the prospect seemed.
He mused over Yuu's words. "I think I could do it. I mean, how hard could it be? I like to think I'm pretty good at explaining stuff, and obviously I have the skills of a good shinobi, else I wouldn't be a jounin, or close enough anyway. Yeah, maybe I'll give it a try. Better than sitting around on my ass all the time."
By the sound of that, Yuu could assume that Kaede had bad past experiences with his senseis. This this man have any good memories?

Yuu shook his head.
“Never ever say 'How hard could it be?' It's like saying 'What's the worst that could happen?' Those two phrases are just begging for something to go wrong. You can do it, and if something goes wrong, you will fix it. You'll do great, Kaede.”
The thing about positive reinforcement was, well, being positive. Leave no rooms for the “ifs” or “buts.”
