After the Fourth Great Shinobi World War ended, the world was experiencing a time of peace. The villages for once were able to live in relative harmony with one another as they rebuilt, and for once, all seemed to be well. The kage were able to live peaceful lives and soon began retiring, passing on the baton to the next generations. That is until an unknown virus infects the northern coast. The first to fall is the once powerful Raikage, Ay. While many thought this virus was a simple mutation of what may have well been the flu, no one would ever think of the destruction it would cause. Especially when it infected a certain Uzumaki Naruto.
With his death came the malice; with the malice came the destruction; with the destruction came the shinobi' revolt; and with the revolt came the sacrifices. The Bijuu became filled with malice that they sought to destroy the world. Shinobi sought a way to fight them and once again capture each of the Bijuu. Time passed, and a plan was devised. The Jinchuuriki would be sacrificed for the greater good of the world, and with the deaths of nine individuals, an uneasy peace began.
As time continued, the villages began to truly restructure. In a peace that would last 80 years after the downfall of the Bijuu, the world would see the creation of a great many things. Technology was beginning to take root and before long the blossoms that grew from the tree of the advanced mind would bear fruit. A many great things came to be. A railroad between the vast many nations. Mechanical limbs to replace lost ones. Radios that could reach between villages. Everything seemed to be becoming less reliant on the shinobi. Only the need for them never truly vanished. As with the growth of time, also continued the growth of malice.

A day can really slip by when you're deliberately avoiding what you're supposed to do.
Shi closed the door quietly, not bothering to announce herself as she headed toward the kitchen. "I sincerely hope he's not waltzing around naked." Or in bed with some woman. He might be free to do as he pleased while the brat was at school, but she didn't particularly want to see any of that nonsense.
She propped the cumbersome bow and gear against the wall, setting some water to boil, making herself at home and making some tea. Maybe if she made him food it would butter him up some? Shi frowned and checked what he had in the way of edibles. Dave hadn't been very helpful, not that she should have expected him to be. It's not like she was asking him to do anything major, just let her drop off his apprentice's crap and point the boy in the right direction when he came in next. But no, if she wanted it done she should do it herself. "Lazy bastard..."
Jun observed the agitated female from a safe distance, tail swishing idly. He was beyond pleased with the situation. The healer was on board, though whether he was even aware of the game remained to be seen, and Kashii would most certainly be on his side. If the Jōnin figured out that Shi was avoiding a confrontation? Well, he might just help push the girl in the right direction. He'd have liked to have time to prepare the bluenette, but he had to trust the sensei to know what the proper course of action should be. After all, he'd been the one to know that Jun was meant to be with Shi, he had to have some brains in that head. "Want me to find him?" "He knows we're here."
Golden eyes contemplated his human companion idly. Her encounter with the medic boy had shaken her. He confused her, she'd admitted as much. Jun couldn't answer her questions, he didn't know why the boy behaved so oddly. But the feline knew how to get the answers. Curious things needed to be investigated, not avoided, though Shi disagreed. He didn't like the girl's discomfort, and he'd gladly rake his claws down the bones of anyone who tried to hurt her, but humans were supposed to be social creatures, and Shi's loved ones could be counted on one paw. This was definitely something that needed to be investigated. If all went well, his Shi would have another friend. If the boy did wrong, then his claws would get the excercise they so rarely enjoyed. It was a win-win, really.
Really, Kashii could have been doing plenty of other things with his valuable time, but he promised the young girl he'd make sure he cleaned the white sand garden every Wednesday. It was her favorite place to sit, and the large Gingko tree in the middle dropped leaves and other litter year-round. Over the years Kashii had managed to get the property in good condition, a good change from when he'd first moved in to a home that hadn't been inhabited within his lifetime. Long days over six years of caring for a child as a single parent left him with a lot of time on his hands when he wasn't working. With Saiko in the academy, it left him with free days not bound to home or with a child, not that he didn't absolutely love taking his daughter around with him.
Kashii paused in his raking when he noticed someone enter his property, looking in the general direction of the front gate. As the garden was at the court, the center of the house, it was impossible to see that way, but he looked nonetheless. As of late he'd gotten more visitors than in years passed, finally deciding to integrate with the populous once more and be more proactive with that small circle he actually gave a damn about.
“Someone's here, Kashii.”
“Eight years and you still won't call me master,”
The feline stuck out her tongue.
“Someone's here, Master.”
“Aye, I know.”
Without investigating further, the Jōnin continued raking the leaf litter from the sand, taking care not to uproot the flowers he and Saiko had planted some years prior around the base of the white-grey granite boulder near the tree. His spotted companion lay lounged atop the large rock, tail curling to and fro in time with his rake. The guests were in the house, and the cat tuned her whiskers and ears toward the sound of the front door sliding open, No knocking.
Pulling herself to her feet, Cat gave her shoulder a quick wash. She needed to be presentable, after all. Still, her master made no notice of care toward the company. Perhaps it was because people knew it was he who lived here. If they were here, there was reason. Petty thieves had learned well that Kashii was not one to steal from. They were lucky if they still had some fingers.
“You're not going?”
“Greet them for me; I'm nearly done here.”
Hopping down from the large white-grey granite rock that decorated the sand garden, Cat trotted up the walk, hopping onto the deck and nosing open the sliding door to enter the house. She knew every corner, every hole, every nook and cranny, she loved everything about this large house. Except the bathroom. That pit of marble and water hell can catch fire for all the Savannah cared. The sounds and the smells of the newcomers alerted her to their presence in the kitchen, and she padded across the tatami-lined home to identify the intruders. About halfway there, the cat easily identified who they were, and galloped the rest of the way to the kitchen, wrapping her body around Shi's legs and bumping noses with Jun.
“What took you so long to visit! It's been weeks since you two have come here! I was starting to think you forgot about us. Kashii's been lonely without you, Shi.”
“I leave you alone for five minutes with strangers and you already start telling lies about me.”
Cat swiveled on her paws to see Kashii in the doorway, rake still in hand, leaning on the jam. He looked over her work in the kitchen. That was right, Wednesday nights were when she made dinners here, weren't they? Way back when.
“What brings you to my humble abode, Shizu-chan~?”

Learning is not child's play; we cannot learn without pain.
"What took you so long to visit! It's been weeks since you two have come here! I was starting to think you forgot about us. Kashii's been lonely without you, Shi."She glanced down at the cat, resisting the temptation to smile. At least someone had missed the company. "I leave you alone for five minutes with strangers and you already start telling lies about me." Strangers indeed. "What brings you to my humble abode, Shizu-chan~?"
"Humble?" As if anything about her former sensei had ever been classed as humble. "I was in the neighborhood." Idiot, like he wouldn't recognize his own lines. "Figured we'd mooch some food off of you, for old time's sake." Her eyes rolled at the attempted save, her attention on the food. She should know better than to try to speak by now. She set aside the small stack of sandwiches and packed up the fixings, licking the knife before setting it aside for cleaning. "How are things?" She set the tea and the plate on the table, sitting without preamble. Have some patience, butter him up some, and then she could be on her way.
Kashii set the rake aside, propping it against the wall. He could put it away later.
"I was in the neighborhood." Kashii gave a crooked smile at that. Like that wasn't an excuse he'd used a thousand and one times to drop in announced on her. "Figured we'd mooch some food off of you, for old time's sake."
“Oh, of course, come mooch food off your poor old sensei. Or are you still jealous that I cook better than you do?”
Kashii'd spent a lot of time teaching the girl to cook. Her meals went from barely palatable to enjoyable with time. At least she didn't try eating dry ramen anymore. At least, he hoped not.
"How are things?"
Kashii followed her lead, seating himself adjacent from her at the table. The two cats, unsurprisingly, took off. There were plenty of places to play hide-and-seek for an overgrown housecat in this place.
“Well enough. Saiko has been asking me to teach her how to fight so she can be stronger than the other boys in her class, I really don't know what to do with the girl.”
He reached for one of Shi's sandwiches, inspecting the ingredients. All good choices. Kashii didn't want Saiko to turn out like him. Hell, he never wanted her to become a kunoichi. But both of her parents and all of her influences were shinobi, it was only natural she'd want to become one, and Kashii couldn't tell the girl no. If she had to be one, Kashii would make sure she would be a damn good one.
“How about yourself? What have you been doing the last few weeks?”

True friends will always push you towards the great possibilities of your future, false friends will always chain you to the mistakes in your past.
“Well enough. Saiko has been asking me to teach her how to fight so she can be stronger than the other boys in her class, I really don't know what to do with the girl.” She couldn't say she was surprised. "She'll do well." She wouldn't expect any less, really. If she inherited half of the spirit her father had she'd be difficult to hold back, nigh impossible to muzzle. "How about yourself? What have you been doing the last few weeks?"
"The usual." She took a bite, chewing slowly to consider her words. "Training. Menial labor. Found a sparring partner of sorts." Dark eyes slid toward the bow leaning against the wall, frowning faintly. He'd implied there would be repeat occurrence. Why she couldn't fathom, but there would be no complaints. Any practice beyond the relatively predictable matches with her former sensei were a break from the monotony.
"The usual. Training. Menial labor. Found a sparring partner of sorts."
“Oh?” Kashii inquired, taking a drink from his tea and following her gaze. There was a familiar bow leaning against the wall, along with other related items, and he placed the cup back in its saucer with a wry smile. He only knew one shinobi with that particular kind of bow, and saw him every time Kashii dropped in to harass Dave. Well, well, kid. About time you did something.
“Found someone that can deal with that temper of yours, have you? I still remember the feel of getting blown halfway across the training grounds during our first swordfighting lesson. Now I see it coming, but that poor, unsuspecting victim... Shame,” Kashii said, shaking his head and nibbling the sandwich more. “solving all of your problems by blasting them away. You were much cuter before you learned how to blow everyone up.”
Naturally, Kashii was teasing her. Shi hated to be called “cute,” even if that was exactly what she was.

Thought I was losing my touch there for a second.

Dark eyes rolled. "He knew damn well to expect it, he's the one who brought the idea up." She chewed slowly. "If anything I would think he'd be angry about the impalement." He hadn't reacted at all, which was bizarre. If she couldn't scare him into submission and chase him away with her usual tactics, it was probably a dangerous sign.
