After the Fourth Great Shinobi World War ended, the world was experiencing a time of peace. The villages for once were able to live in relative harmony with one another as they rebuilt, and for once, all seemed to be well. The kage were able to live peaceful lives and soon began retiring, passing on the baton to the next generations. That is until an unknown virus infects the northern coast. The first to fall is the once powerful Raikage, Ay. While many thought this virus was a simple mutation of what may have well been the flu, no one would ever think of the destruction it would cause. Especially when it infected a certain Uzumaki Naruto.
With his death came the malice; with the malice came the destruction; with the destruction came the shinobi' revolt; and with the revolt came the sacrifices. The Bijuu became filled with malice that they sought to destroy the world. Shinobi sought a way to fight them and once again capture each of the Bijuu. Time passed, and a plan was devised. The Jinchuuriki would be sacrificed for the greater good of the world, and with the deaths of nine individuals, an uneasy peace began.
As time continued, the villages began to truly restructure. In a peace that would last 80 years after the downfall of the Bijuu, the world would see the creation of a great many things. Technology was beginning to take root and before long the blossoms that grew from the tree of the advanced mind would bear fruit. A many great things came to be. A railroad between the vast many nations. Mechanical limbs to replace lost ones. Radios that could reach between villages. Everything seemed to be becoming less reliant on the shinobi. Only the need for them never truly vanished. As with the growth of time, also continued the growth of malice.

The sun was just beginning to peek out from over the horizon, casting its pale yellow light on the rocky terrain that stretched out as far as the eye could see. A lone figure jauntily made its way across the land, sticking to a clearly predetermined path that likely wouldn't make sense to a casual observer. He was treading on the thin line between the Land of Earth and the minor country that bordered this section of it, being careful to never dip too far into the land containing the major shinobi village of Iwagakure. He was out here on personal business, not on a mission or other assignment for ANBU, and he really wasn't in the mood to get in a fight just because some other shinobi wanted to puff out his chest and get possessive over his territory. So he was keeping a cautious path. The last thing he wanted to do was fuck up and get in trouble when he finally did get home.
Thankfully, home was maybe a day or two away, depending on how fast he decided to move. And seeing as he hadn't used all of his allotted leave, which had been an utter pain to secure in the first place, he planned on taking his damn time getting back to the village and enjoy the, uh, scenery. Yeah, the wonderful, amazing scenery of rocks and scraggly trees and okay, mostly just rocks.
He'd been walking for a couple hours now, and it was about time for a break. So he came to a halt near a clump of absolutely pathetic looking trees, leaned back against them, and took a long drink of water. He fished in one of his many pockets and withdrew a couple pieces of hard candy, unwrapping them dexterously with a single hand and popping them in his mouth, savoring the citrus flavor. His pale pink eyes constantly scanned the area around him - there was a bit of paranoia that, as a shinobi, one could never exactly get rid of. And that was a good thing. Mostly.
Except for when it made him feel like he was being watched (and therefore judged) constantly. That was an unpleasant feeling, and it made his skin crawl. As soon as he was refreshed, he was moving on - hopefully to an area with more cover.
Scouting. Because the thing Yuu totally wanted to do with his time was to go scouting. Alone. On the edge of the country, days away from home, when the last scouting adventure involved kisses and blood. And Yuu had to say, the former wasn't so bad but the latter was the consequence. Yet Chinatsu-sensei found it prudent to continue sending Yuu out to scout, because it was something the medic was totally good at, right? Perhaps the Tsuchikage was just trying to get rid of him.
“It's not my fault I'm not very intimidating...” he muttered, “And that I'm not good at foreign relations... okay, maybe it is my fault...”
Perhaps Yuu should take up weightlifting. A different haircut, maybe. An eyepatch. No, then he'd just look like a pirate, and pirates and ninjas never get along. That's why they're bound to the northern seas. Perhaps getting contacts in place of glasses? Oh but Yuu tried that when he was younger; not a very big fan of fingers going in his own eyes. It was a lot easier to be careful with other people's eyes. Whatever it was about him that made people not take him seriously, he needed to change it. There was always a chance that it was his face... but it was something Yuu tried not to think of as the problem.
Something about the air felt wrong, and Yuu pulled his bow over his head, holding it tightly in hand. He wasn't sure what it was, but it made him feel on-edge. Perhaps it was just a feeling. This area was especially open with little cover to speak of. In the shinobi world, there's no worse feeling than having your back exposed. As the feeling increased, Yuu pulled a blue-fletched arrow from his bag (yes yes, he still hadn't gotten a new quiver yet), nocking it to his bowstring. It could be nothing, but it was better to be safe than sorry.
After a few minutes more of travel, the source of the uneasiness was spotted, and Yuu saw a lone individual walking along the edge that marked the border between Tsuchi no Kuni and Ame no Kuni. Technically, the individual was on the Ame side of the line, however, this did not stop Yuu from pointing the arrow on his bow toward this person. The only reason he could think of for someone to be on the line is if they intended on crossing. In this age, most people took the trains to enter a country; only shinobi intent on being more covert still take the path on foot.
So Yuu approached, a bit wary of this individual. As he neared, he could see the interesting menagerie of colors in this person's hair, whom he identified as male, and he determined he was close enough.
“Why are you walking the border?” Yuu asked, loud enough for this stranger to hear. Despite the arrow locked on to the target, there was no aggression in Yuu's tone. After all, the other person, shinobi from what he could tell, was still technically on the other side of the line, and therefore technically not doing anything wrong.

Kaede, having been on high alert, had sensed the other shinobi shortly before he spoke. He hadn't intended to interact with said shinobi - sort of hoping that he'd figure out that Kaede was minding his own business on his own side of the border. Unfortunately, that was not the case.
He turned to face the other shinobi, hackles raised; the boy certainly wasn't making a good impression, being that he was pointing a bow, complete with nocked arrow, directly at him. Kaede's pale pink eyes bled away into the blood red of the Sharingan, the single tomoe in each eye spinning into place. If this boy decided to make trouble, the tokujo fully intended to give him hell and probably nightmares. He wasn't a wantonly cruel person, but if someone decided to start shit with him... He would mess them up. And he would be justified in it, too, being that if the Iwa boy incited a fight, he'd be doing so by shooting Kaede whilst he was in his own country. He angled his body so that the boy would be able to see the Amegakure headband tied around his right shoulder, never for a second taking his eyes off the bow and arrow.
"Isn't a shinobi allowed to take a leisurely walk on the border of his own country?" he drawled, scowl on his face. "Frankly, it's none of your goddamn business what I'm doing here. Kindly stop pointing your bow at me before I decide that I feel threatened and want to do something about it." He didn't cut the most imposing figure - being rather short and thin for a man, with blue and pink hair and accessories - but his attitude was most certainly intimidating. Or so he thought, anyway.
The tip of Yuu's arrow lowered by a fraction when the male across the way turned. He felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end when the other shinobi's eyes turned from a cotton-candy pink to a blood red, a black spot in each eye. Uchiha. Why was an Uchiha here? Yuu couldn't help but feel that bubble of interest, but it was outweighed by the increased mistrust of the individual across the border.
"Isn't a shinobi allowed to take a leisurely walk on the border of his own country?" Yuu's odd-colored eyes narrowed. "Frankly, it's none of your goddamn business what I'm doing here. Kindly stop pointing your bow at me before I decide that I feel threatened and want to do something about it."
Lowering the bow more, Yuu released the arrow. It embedded between two rocks just inside the Tsuchi side of the border. The bow fell to his left side, right hand going to his hip.
“As I am allowed to target-practice on the border of my own country.”

Kaede's body tensed when the boy released his arrow, but his eyes were able to track the trajectory enough to know that the Iwa shinobi hadn't been aiming for him. It probably would've been more prudent to take cover or something, but the tokujo wasn't going to let this guy intimidate him. He could wave his bow around all he liked, Kaede wasn't going to budge an inch until this guy decided to back the fuck off. To him, walking away was tantamount to giving up and slinking away with his metaphorical tail between his legs, and he, having a tendency to butt heads at every available opportunity, wasn't going to back down.
"Heh. That's lovely. I'm absolutely terrified, don't you know," Kaede snorted, a derisive Uchiha Smirk™ plastered on his face. "Run along, now. Some of us don't like being stared at like we're carnival attractions." He popped another piece of candy into his mouth, crossed his arms defensively over his chest, and proceeded to stare right in the boy's heterochromatic eyes. Hopefully the Sharingan were upping his almost nonexistent intimidation factor.
“If you don't want to be mistaken for a carnival attraction, you shouldn't dress the part,” Yuu replied with a mirrored smirk. Keeping his ground, Yuu let the end of his bow rest on the ground.

When the words came out of the Iwa shinobi's mouth, Kaede flinched - visibly, which the boy was sure to notice - and hugged his arms tighter to his chest. It frustrated him immensely that, even after so many years, he was so vulnerable to the words of strangers. This guy didn't know him, didn't know anything about him, didn't have a clue who he really was - he was just making a stupid asshole comment about his style of dress. Admittedly, his style was unusual for a shinobi, but the hair dye and the piercings and the clip-on tie and armbands had been his way of expressing everything he could never verbalize, how different he felt from other people, and how he wanted to stand out, but for different reasons. The Iwa shinobi didn't know that. But that didn't mean it didn't hurt.
"... Fuck you, man," he muttered under his breath, eyes downcast.
The immediate change in demeanor in the Uchiha was unsettling. Hey hey, what happened to that attitude not thirty seconds ago? Damnit, this was why Yuu shouldn't be allowed to interact with foreign shinobi on his own. He viewed them as actual people, unlike many of his comrades.
“Hey... I didn't mean... uh.” Yuu kinda felt awkward, like he did something bad without meaning to. Which, apparently, he did. Lifting his bow from the ground, Yuu approached the shinobi slowly. It may be the only chance he'd ever have at meeting an Uchiha, may as well take advantage of it. Be nice, Yuu. “I'm sorry. My name is Yuu, what's yours?”
you take your needles and sew my mouth shut but you will never hear the last of me
Kaede's hackles raised as the purple-haired boy approached, eyes guarded; he didn't look half as aggressive as he wished he did, the way he'd flinched back like he expected to be hit. No one had hit him like that in nine years and he still reacted the same goddamn way. His own weakness pissed him off. The fact that the other shinobi seemed to feel sorry for him now left a bitter taste in his mouth.
"Kaede," he bit out, not acknowledging the boy's apology one bit. And he didn't attempt to incite further conversation, just staring down at the ground, picking at a loose thread on his striped armband. With the boy this close, the tokujo was beginning to feel cornered, despite the fact that the archer wasn't showing any signs of aggression. Goddamnit.
“Kaede,” Yuu echoed, confirming the name of the Uchiha. Nothing about the colorful male indicated he would attack, and Yuu knew that using a bow against an Uchiha would be pointless anyway, so he pulled the bow overhead, the string going across his chest to rest it on his back. See? Unarmed now. If anything, the Ame nin appeared to be running away from something, otherwise why would he look so meek now? Uchiha were a proud people from what Yuu had read.
“It's nice to meet you.”
Kaede was about the same height as the medic himself was, but something about the opposing male made him seem smaller. Now Yuu was feeling bad for shooting at him. Reaching out, he gave the foreign shinobi a pat on the head.
you take your needles and sew my mouth shut but you will never hear the last of me
At the moment he was fairly sure that Yuu wasn't going to shoot him, so he felt alright about turning off the Sharingan. His eyes bled back into candy-colored pink, but all the action really achieved was showing the Iwa shinobi the hurt that lurked within them. Fuck, this was absolutely pathetic.
Yuu reached out toward him - a completely nonthreatening gesture in and of itself - and Kaede flinched, again ducking away from the boy's hand like he was sure he was about to be struck. "C-could you, uhm, not do that, please?"
he asked, his words hesitant. Yeah, this wasn't going well for him. Fuck.
Yuu's fingers curled and he retracted his arm when the other male flinched as if the chuunin was about to strike him.
“Ah, sorry... I tend to kinda touch peop—i-it's a bad habit reall—hum.”
Yeah, Yuu needed to work on that. He had a habit of touching people. For him, touching was comforting to a degree, and he tried to extend that same comfort to others when he was around, however he was abstractly aware that most people found it uncomfortable. Making the Uchiha uncomfortable was not the route he wanted to take, and he backed away.
“I'm, uh, not gonna hit you...” he said awkwardly, “And I won't touch you. It's just something I do, sorry if that troubled you. What brought you all the way out to the border of the Earth country? Surely not just a leisurely walk. If you don't mind me asking, that is.” he hastily tacked on the end.
you take your needles and sew my mouth shut but you will never hear the last of me
"It, uh, it's alright. I'm not - I don't like being touched," he confirmed lamely, really not sure what else to say. This had devolved into the most awkward conversation ever and Kaede had no idea what to do next. But so long as it didn't involve the other shinobi getting up close and personal like that again, he could deal with it. Probably. Maybe.
"I'm on my way home." He gestured to the Ame headband tied around his shoulder. "Had some personal leave. Went visiting. Walked 'cause I wanted to be alone. I'm not plotting anything suspicious. I promise," he explained in short, halting bursts, unsure just how much he should say to this guy - yeah, he was friendly now, but he'd already gone and activated the kicked puppy part of Kaede that he wished with all his heart he could get rid of, and that left the man feeling nervous as hell.
Yuu listened to the staggered explanation from the other shinobi. As the males pink eyes were downcast, Yuu took advantage of the close proximity to examine this shinobi. Something about him seemed... oh, Yuu didn't even know how to describe it. He seemed... too soft for a man. The curve of the jaw, the shape of the shoulders, all things Yuu was familiar with on a personal level.
“You... you're a g—”
Yuu bit off the word before he started to say it. By the way the shinobi breathed he could tell the breathing was impaired. Yuu may be one of the only ones who could recognize a cause for that, because it's something he used to deal with, as well. Layering helped a lot to change the fashion of how he bound his chest and made breathing easier.
“G... uh. Good person, from what I can tell. Not suspicious at all.”
you take your needles and sew my mouth shut but you will never hear the last of me
Kaede fidgeted, highly uncomfortable - not only because of the other shinobi's scrutiny, but because the tightness of his chest combined with his nerves made his breathing quick and shallow. He was really going to have to figure out a better way to deal with this particular problem. Later, when he wasn't about to freak out in front of a foreign shinobi.
He looked up, startled, when the boy spoke again. "You - I-I - uhm," he stuttered out, biting down hard on his lip. How in the hell... He'd been too distracted by his own stupid feelings to make any sort of observations of his own about the other shinobi. And at the moment he was too surprised - and also a little panicked, if the way his eyes were darting about was any indication - to look more closely at Yuu.
The way his body tensed and turned slightly towards his right would surely indicate to the boy that Kaede was about ready to bolt. Before something happened, before everything got all fucked up again. No one in Ame, save for the medics at the hospital, knew the truth about Kaede's gender, and he didn't want them to. The Iwa shinobi's discovery almost felt like an invasion of privacy, and - well, if Kaede hadn't been upset before, he certainly was now. A single tear slipped from the corner of his eye and trailed its way slowly down his face, opening the floodgates.
