After the Fourth Great Shinobi World War ended, the world was experiencing a time of peace. The villages for once were able to live in relative harmony with one another as they rebuilt, and for once, all seemed to be well. The kage were able to live peaceful lives and soon began retiring, passing on the baton to the next generations. That is until an unknown virus infects the northern coast. The first to fall is the once powerful Raikage, Ay. While many thought this virus was a simple mutation of what may have well been the flu, no one would ever think of the destruction it would cause. Especially when it infected a certain Uzumaki Naruto.
With his death came the malice; with the malice came the destruction; with the destruction came the shinobi' revolt; and with the revolt came the sacrifices. The Bijuu became filled with malice that they sought to destroy the world. Shinobi sought a way to fight them and once again capture each of the Bijuu. Time passed, and a plan was devised. The Jinchuuriki would be sacrificed for the greater good of the world, and with the deaths of nine individuals, an uneasy peace began.
As time continued, the villages began to truly restructure. In a peace that would last 80 years after the downfall of the Bijuu, the world would see the creation of a great many things. Technology was beginning to take root and before long the blossoms that grew from the tree of the advanced mind would bear fruit. A many great things came to be. A railroad between the vast many nations. Mechanical limbs to replace lost ones. Radios that could reach between villages. Everything seemed to be becoming less reliant on the shinobi. Only the need for them never truly vanished. As with the growth of time, also continued the growth of malice.
Mika skipped along the side of the road, grinning broadly, a few crumpled bills clutched in her hand. She didn't have school today because of an unexpected accident, so her parents had said she could walk around the village, get lunch, and play with her friends. The young blonde was incredibly excited to have a day all to herself where her parents weren't trying to hold her hand at every step. They had a hard time remembering that their little girl was growing up. In just a few years, she would be a real shinobi! She would get to fight to protect her parents and her village, and they couldn't hold her hand through that, even if they wanted to.
The girl offered a smile and a polite bow to the cook at the ramen stand before hopping up on a stool and ordering a small bowl of pork ramen with all the toppings. She traded a few ryo for the bowl, stuffed the rest of her money in her pocket, and began to eat. Although she wanted to just wolf it down - she was so hungry 'cause she hadn't eaten dinner the previous night; she'd fallen asleep at the table and her mom and dad had just put her to bed, figuring she'd needed the rest - she made herself eat slowly and carefully, and without spilling the broth everywhere. That would be rude, after all, and her mom had raised her to never, ever be rude, especially not in public.
After finishing off her first bowl with incredible speed, she pushed the bowl across the counter and thanked the chef for his awesome cooking. Mika was considering ordering another bowl to sate her still-growling stomach, but before she could decide what kind she wanted to try, she caught a flash of bright red out of the corner of her eye. Attention caught, she turned to get a good look at whatever was red, and saw a really... different-looking guy. Really different looking, with a tail, and with horns sticking out of his head! Whoa.
Casting another glance at the old chef, she told him she'd be back for more later, slid off the stool, and headed off in pursuit of this strange guy.

It was, perhaps, eleven in the morning. Heiki had just returned from running some errand for the Raikage, checking the status of a farmer's water mill further down the mountain. Yes, it was still broken. No, Heiki didn't have the slightest clue how to fix it. So that required coming back to the village to report his findings, then going out again to locate someone who could do the repairs, and escort the man out to the farmer's mill at the bottom of the mountain. Afterwards, Heiki would have to go back out yet again this evening to bring the civilian carpenter back. At least he was getting paid.
Heiki paused on the walk, tail twitching. He could sense someone approaching him, someone that was not part of the flow of the thin crowd. Goodie. Every day, there was always someone. Couldn't they find some other of his kin to bother? It wasn't as if Heiki was the only Tsukaima in the village. He sighed, half-pivoting on his toes to identify his pursuer. It took him a moment to blink then look down to identify her. A child, either civilian or academy, from the looks. Looking down at her, he spoke.
The redhead turned to face her. Turning red, Mika squeaked and ducked behind a small decorative tree on the side of the road. It was really embarrassing to be caught following someone. She didn't really know what to do. A large part of her wanted to turn tail and run away and pretend she'd never seen him. But that would be rude. Of course, so was stalking him. But...
After a long, awkward moment of silence, she peeked out from behind the tree and looked up at him. "U-uhm..." Mika hesitated, unsure of how exactly to broach the topic she wanted to bring up. "Your tail is really cool," she blurted eventually, eyes wide.

Heiki watched the girl turn red, ducking behind a tree. When she didn't come out, he felt compelled to leave, however they just ended up staring at each other a while before she looked out from behind the tree. Heiki tilted his head when she started to try and speak. Here it comes. He sighed.
"Your tail is really cool,"
Oh. Well, that was unexpected.
“Oh... um... Thank you.”
Heiki curled his tail around his left leg, not really used to getting complimented about it. He took a half-step back to widen the personal space bubble. Was he supposed to return a compliment? She didn't really have anything spectacular about her. She was too young to be a shinobi, so Heiki didn't know if she was an academy student or a civilian child. Not that it even really mattered.
“Your hair is nice.”
It seemed a logical thing to compliment; she certainly had an excess of it.
He acted like the compliment was unexpected, which the girl thought was strange. It looked so cool, and she oohed in awe when it curled around his leg. Well, there went any doubts that it was real. She'd never seen anybody with a real tail before. Was he born that way? Why did he have it? Mika was quite completely fascinated. However, she was still a little too shy to just start blurting out questions and invade his personal space and try to touch it or something. Which he probably appreciated.
Her hand went to her hair when he spoke again, causing her to smile softly. "Thank you, sir," she replied politely, inching out from behind the tree in order to approach him. The girl maintained a decent distance away out of respect for his personal space, and folded her arms over her chest. "What's your name?" she asked. "I'm Mikazuki... b-but you can call me Mika, if you want."

"Thank you, sir,"
Heiki wouldn't say this girl wasn't interesting. She seemed respectful, which was more than most people gave him. Perhaps he'd stick around and chat with her.
"What's your name? I'm Mikazuki... b-but you can call me Mika, if you want."
He dipped his head in slight greeting, tail whipping from one side to the other in a twitchy sort of way.
“My name is Heiki, Mizazuk-san. Are you an academy student?”

Heiki noted the way her brown eyes followed the movements of his tail, and he curled it around his left ankle to keep it from swaying. He might have full control of it, but that didn't mean it didn't move on its own sometimes.
“Second year, huh? Does Kurobawa-sensei still teach history?”
When people thought about a ninja academy, they thought of weapons and chakra training. But the fact of the matter was that it was still a normal school with normal subjects. Shinobi training merely replaced the physical education courses that civilian schools had. The focus on shinobi training increased each year, but the school hours were also longer for the older students. There was a lot to teach a child that was expected to go into combat once they reached twelve.
"Yeah." The face the young girl made was sure to let him know exactly what she thought of Kurobawa-sensei and his history lessons. She found the history of Kumogakure interesting, yes, but the sensei's toneless lecture and tendency to repeat himself made his lessons so hard to listen to. He was a nice man - she distinctly remembered several afternoons where he had gifted the students with candy or other treats just because he could.
"Kagome-sensei doesn't teach maths anymore. She left two weeks ago 'cause she's having a baby!" That was news that she found exciting enough to share, although she didn't know if Kagome-sensei had been teaching at the academy when Heiki attended; she was fairly young, and the girl wasn't sure how old the goat man was. Besides, like most children, she was a pretty bad judge of age.
After a long moment of silence, during which her big brown eyes were focused on the tail that was no longer twitching, Mika blurted out a question that she just couldn't hold back anymore, even if it might be rude. "Mister Heiki-san, why do you have a tail?"

"Yeah. Kagome-sensei doesn't teach maths anymore. She left two weeks ago 'cause she's having a baby!"
Heiki blinked. There hadn't been a “Kagome-sensei” when he was there.
“Is that who replaced Inoue-sensei? She was retiring the year I graduated.”
She was still staring at him. One would think Heiki was used to being stared at, but it was still a bit unsettling.
"Mister Heiki-san, why do you have a tail?"
“Well, why don't you have a tail, Mikazuki-san?” He pondered for a moment. It wasn't as if it was a secret. “Everyone in my clan has a tail. It helps us balance when we walk and jump.”
"I've never met an Inoue-sensei, so I would think so," Mika confirmed with a nod. Kagome-sensei wasn't so new that that wasn't a possibility, but she was the newest of all the senseis at the academy - so she and Heiki had mostly had the same teachers, which was kind of cool.
The girl was momentarily struck dumb by his question. Why didn't she have a tail? Why didn't everybody have tails? Huh. She'd never thought about that before. "...I wish I had a cool tail like that," she murmured, eyes glittering.

"...I wish I had a cool tail like that."
The faun sighed inwardly. Must she be fixated on it?
“There are costume shops where you can get tails.”
Though, he had to admit, the girl was a welcome change to the attention he normally got when strangers stopped him in the street. She didn't stop him to talk about the academy. He crouched a bit boredly, balancing on his strong ankles. Like this, he was a lot closer to eye level with the girl, just a bit lower. He curled his tail away from traffic.
“If you want to keep chatting, we should get out of the middle of the street.”
When he crouched in front of her, she took the opportunity to examine his horns - which she also deemed cool - and get a closer look at his tail. It was then that she noticed that his legs were different too. That raised so many questions within the girl - questions that she didn't want to ask, for fear of being rude. The curiosity continued to well up inside her, but she was determined not to let it out.
"O-oh, yeah... want to go sit on that bench?" Mika pointed out said bench and gave him an inquisitive look.

"O-oh, yeah... want to go sit on that bench?"
Heiki glanced up at the bench she pointed to. That was out of the way enough. Leaning forward a bit, the Tsukaima stood again, tail-tip twitching.
“Yeah,” he said, tapping the girl on the back to urge her towards it. Seating himself beside the girl, he pulled his tail out of the way to curve across his lap. He looked her over. He could tell she wanted to ask. She seemed like a pretty good kid, considering the others he'd dealt with.
“...if you have questions for me, you c'n ask them.”
Mika perched beside him on the bench, still eying his tail. When he gave her permission to ask questions, she looked up at him with wide eyes. A part of her still thought it a little rude to ask, but he had said she could... "Heiki-san, c-can I touch your tail?"
Her cheeks reddened slightly after the words were out, and she bit her lip. Oh, what if he thought that was rude? If she had upset her new (hopefully) friend, she would be so ashamed of herself...
