After the Fourth Great Shinobi World War ended, the world was experiencing a time of peace. The villages for once were able to live in relative harmony with one another as they rebuilt, and for once, all seemed to be well. The kage were able to live peaceful lives and soon began retiring, passing on the baton to the next generations. That is until an unknown virus infects the northern coast. The first to fall is the once powerful Raikage, Ay. While many thought this virus was a simple mutation of what may have well been the flu, no one would ever think of the destruction it would cause. Especially when it infected a certain Uzumaki Naruto.
With his death came the malice; with the malice came the destruction; with the destruction came the shinobi' revolt; and with the revolt came the sacrifices. The Bijuu became filled with malice that they sought to destroy the world. Shinobi sought a way to fight them and once again capture each of the Bijuu. Time passed, and a plan was devised. The Jinchuuriki would be sacrificed for the greater good of the world, and with the deaths of nine individuals, an uneasy peace began.
As time continued, the villages began to truly restructure. In a peace that would last 80 years after the downfall of the Bijuu, the world would see the creation of a great many things. Technology was beginning to take root and before long the blossoms that grew from the tree of the advanced mind would bear fruit. A many great things came to be. A railroad between the vast many nations. Mechanical limbs to replace lost ones. Radios that could reach between villages. Everything seemed to be becoming less reliant on the shinobi. Only the need for them never truly vanished. As with the growth of time, also continued the growth of malice.

it's a starry starry night out here on hope street, paint my world in blue
Chi awoke with a start, wide eyes blinking open and staring up at the ceiling. She whimpered under her breath, clutching the puppy-print blanket to her chest as if it could protect her from the monsters in her mind. She'd had a bad dream - the bad dream, actually, the one she had every couple of weeks. She was alone, abandoned again, trapped inside a lake of ice and slowly drowning. The people she knew walked atop the ice, and never once did they look down and see her, hear her fists beating against the inch-thick ice. And they didn't miss her. They forgot she existed. And she died, lonely, with not a soul in the world to care.
Normally, when she awoke from this dream, she'd make herself a small cup of warm milk, calm her nerves, make a giant nest of blankets in her bed, and curl up until first light, when she would escape the confines of her apartment for the great outdoors, where every nightmare of drowning seemed so far away. But she wasn't in her bed in her apartment. She was curled into a ball on Yuu's sofa, feeling terribly lost and out of place.
Chi stumbled off the couch, dragging the blanket behind her as she quietly made her way to Yuu's bedroom, slipping through the door without a sound. There was enough room for her to curl up next to him under his blanket - draping the other one carefully over the both of them - without being in danger of falling off the edge. Mostly because she had snuggled so close to the boy that she could tuck her head under his and use his chest for a pillow.
Next to another warm body, she felt safer, more at ease. And it was Yuu, whom she already liked quite a lot, and trusted far more than she probably should. He was familiar and comfortable and she was going to remain firmly attached to him until morning whether he liked it or not.
A low purr rumbled from her throat as she dozed off again, this time into a sleep that was dreamless.
Yuu grumbled irritably at the feel of a body pressing against his own. He was way too tired for this, but even though he growled, he did not push the person away.
“Why are you in my bed again, mutt....” he muttered sleepily. The feel of a head against his breasts was uncomfortable, and Yuu put a hand on the head to at least push it away from his chest. It wasn't until his fingers stroked across a velvety soft warm thing that most certainly did not belong to the knucklehead blonde did the medic open his eyes. It was dark, but he could now clearly hear the purring pressed against his chest, large ear flicking under his fingers. Yuu's blood all but ran cold as he bolted upright, nearly falling off the edge of his bed as he recoiled away.

Chi's ears flicked as a voice penetrated through the haze of sleep. Mutt? She wasn't a mutt. That wasn't a very nice thing to say. If she had been more awake, she probably would have scratched at the boy for being rude. But, at the moment, she was nuzzling into his surprisingly soft chest, purring up a storm.
She blinked sleepily and sat up when Yuu almost fell out of bed. "Mm... Had a bad dream," she murmured in way of explanation. "Lay back down. Your chest is a good pillow." Chi yawned and stretched, clearly still half asleep. Thus, she hadn't yet noticed exactly why Yuu's chest was such a good pillow. "I'm still tiiiired, Yuu. C'monnn."
A bad dream? Well that was... somewhat understandable...
"Lay back down. Your chest is a good pillow. I'm still tiiiired, Yuu. C'monnn."
She may have not been able to see it in the dim light (or maybe she could? Cats could see in the dark...) but Yuu was rather unable to answer, the red in his face reaching his ears, arms crossed protectively over his loose chest.
“Y-you should go back to your bed, Chiyoko.”
There went his nerves all over again. She seemed much too tired, though, or she would have questioned him by now. Perhaps he could use that to his advantage. Steer her back out with something to occupy her attention until she slept again.
“Would you like me to make you something to drink?”

She could tell that he was blushing, though she couldn't imagine why. All she'd done was cuddle up to him so she could sleep. Nobody wanted to have a tired, cranky catgirl on their hands, after all, so really she was doing him a favor by sleeping practically inside of him. "Don't wanna move. You're comfier," she insisted, rubbing the sleep out of one eye.
Chi considered his question for a moment. "Could you make me some warm milk? Just a little bit, though." She loved the taste, but if she drank too much milk she got sick. Stupid lactose intolerance. Still she didn't make a move to vacate Yuu's bed, tired eyes fixated on the chuunin, waiting for his response.
Yuu frowned. Well, if she was going to stay here, then he'd just sleep on the couch. Simple. There was only enough room for one person.
“Y-you should go back to your bed, Chiyoko.”

"Could you make me some warm milk? Just a little bit, though."
“Alright, but you have to go to sleep when you drink it, okay?”
Yuu kind of felt like he was talking to a kid rather than a teenager. Were all the people from Kusa plagued with such naïvety, or was it only her? Did it have to do with the reason why she was a cat? He'd delve into that tomorrow when they talk about Kamizuru more. For now, he got up to get the milk. Rummaging through the kitchen, Yuu considered what herbs he had on-hand to help ease her sleep. He had catmint, that was good; he'd gotten that only yesterday. Yuu yawned, peeling open the package and withdrawing a couple leaves, searching for a cup. He hadn't had time to do anything with it yet, so he instead extracted the moisture from the leaves, all of the nutrients coming with the liquid and going to the bottom of the cup. Next came some milk, and he added a little bit of honey, too. A nice drink to help a troubled sleeper rest easier.
Heating it up, Yuu leaned against the counter, still sleepy. If she fell asleep he could carry her back out here; waking up without his binder nearby wouldn't be nice, and if he was lucky, she wouldn’t remember anything about his “comfy chest.” Retrieving the milk from the microwave, he returned to the room, giving Chiyoko the milk.

"Okay," she agreed without complaint, yawning again. She shifted so her back rested against Yuu's pillow and nested in the two blankets, waiting for him to return with her milk.
"Thanks, Yuu," she chirped, accepting the warm cup. Hm. It smelled a little different than just plain milk, so obviously he had put something in it. But what could it be? Chi took a sip and pondered that question. A little bit of honey, maybe? And... She wasn't sure what the other flavor was, but it was really good. The girl downed the milk in record time and handed the cup back to Yuu. "That was really tasty. What'd you put in it?"
Shortly after, she began to purr again. Chi wasn't quite sure why she felt so dreamy, or why she felt the need to cuddle up to Yuu even more than she already did... But hey, why not? "C'n you c'mere an' sit down for a minute?" she asked, slurring her words slightly.
“I added honey and catmint. It will help you sleep better.”
Yuu took the cup, setting it on the side table. There was that odd purring sound again. Oh wait... catmint. Catnip. Cat. Well, hell.
"C'n you c'mere an' sit down for a minute?"
Yuu sighed. No, he really didn't want to. But she did have a bad dream, and it was his job to take care of people. So, the medic sat at the edge of the bed next to her.
“I'm gonna go sleep out there, do you still need something?”

Catmint. That was something Chi had never had before... Probably for a good reason. Catmint. Catgirl. Yeah. Well, it was working. Not as Yuu had intended it, of course... but it was definitely having an effect.
"Yeah," she replied vaguely, crawling into his lap. Chi looked up at him, affection clear in her eyes as she purred, rubbing her cheek against his own. "Wanna cuddle. You're not allowed t' say no."
The girl settled herself comfortably in his lap, chin resting on his shoulder as she nuzzled his neck. Her arms were wrapped around him, and her chest was pressed to his. Chi felt right at home; Yuu, on the other hand, probably wanted to just knock her out so he could sleep in peace without getting kind of molested by a stoned catgirl. Oh well. He would just have to deal with it, wouldn't he?
"Yeah. Wanna cuddle. You're not allowed t' say no."
Yuu went rigid once again when she climbed her way into his lap, cheek burning where she rubbed hers across. He curled his fingers around the edge of the mattress.
“If 'm not allowed to say no, then h—ahh..ah. Hey.”
The girl was beginning to make him tingle in strange ways, in strange places, with the way she clung to him and rubbed against him. He was pretty sure that wasn't a good thing. Pulling an arm under her knees, Yuu stood, lifting her and laying her down, trying to pry her fingers off.
“If you stop climbing on me, I'll rub your ears for a while. Is that a fair trade?”
So tired. But if it kept her off of him... and he knew a lot of animals got sleepy and stuff when their head and ears were rubbed. Clearly catmint had an adverse effect, so maybe petting her? To illustrate his point, Yuu reached over, rubbing one of the tall, soft ears. They were very snuggly-feeling ears. Perhaps Yuu should look into getting a pet some time. One that was a little hardier than a mouse.

Honestly, she could have fallen asleep right there in his lap quite easily. He was comfy. She was tired, and the catmint wasn't changing that; if he'd just let her lay there for ten minutes or so he could have dumped her on the couch and gone back to sleep. Unfortunately, Yuu didn't know that. So instead he tried to pry the stubborn, clingy catgirl off of him. Which, as one might imagine, didn't exactly go well for him. If she hadn't been so occupied trying to keep her arms around his neck, she probably would have scratched him. A lot.
However, her stubborn clinging and flailing came to a halt when he offered to rub her ears, and she allowed him to set her down on the bed. "Kay." Chi still leaned against him, but at least she wasn't on top of him, trying to pretty much crawl inside him. That was an improvement, right? Her tail swished over his lap, thumping against his abdomen. "'m still sleepy, Yuuuuuu."
It seemed he'd picked the right course of action. She calmed more when he rubbed her ears. Scooting closer to her head, Yuu began to rub both, rather interested in the eerie sound of her purr now that he was used to it. Hopefully this would help, and he could go. But, while he was touching the ears already, he examined them by feel. Very muscular around the base, and very warm. There was a kink on the one side, perhaps that was where it folded? Yuu never really spent much time around cats. If only it wasn't so dark, he could see better.

"Please stay an' sleep with me, Yuu," she pleaded, looking back at him with a pathetic expression on her face. Sure, she could probably fall asleep again even without him there, but would she stay asleep? Or would she have another nightmare and wake up even more confused and go lay (quite literally) on top of him until he gave in and cuddled with her?
"I don't wanna have 'nother nightmare, Yuu," she whimpered softly, clinging to him again. He really wasn't going to get out of this. Unless he shoved her out of his bedroom and locked the door. And then she would just sit outside of it and cry until she either fell asleep against the door or he gave up and let her in. "Please."
"Please stay an' sleep with me, Yuu," He may very well have to, if he was going to get any sleep at all. "I don't wanna have 'nother nightmare, Yuu,"
A long, tired sigh.
“Alright.” It wasn't as if Yuu could even particularly stop her from having nightmares. But he wanted to sleep. “Let me go.”
When he got her arms off of him, Yuu went around the other side, sitting on the edge, still rather hesitant. But clearly she would not leave him alone or let him sleep, otherwise. And the blankets were sooo inviting. Just deal with it in the morning. Laying down, he was determined to actually try and get some sleep. The clock on the table was reading single-digit hours.

Chi purred with satisfaction when he finally agreed, and let go of him without complaint. She scooted over so she wasn't in the middle of the bed, giving him adequate room, and laid down, curling up.
Within a few minutes, she was fast asleep again. However, the girl still gravitated towards the heat produced by Yuu. The boy would likely wake up in the morning with Chi cuddled up against him once again.
