After the Fourth Great Shinobi World War ended, the world was experiencing a time of peace. The villages for once were able to live in relative harmony with one another as they rebuilt, and for once, all seemed to be well. The kage were able to live peaceful lives and soon began retiring, passing on the baton to the next generations. That is until an unknown virus infects the northern coast. The first to fall is the once powerful Raikage, Ay. While many thought this virus was a simple mutation of what may have well been the flu, no one would ever think of the destruction it would cause. Especially when it infected a certain Uzumaki Naruto.
With his death came the malice; with the malice came the destruction; with the destruction came the shinobi' revolt; and with the revolt came the sacrifices. The Bijuu became filled with malice that they sought to destroy the world. Shinobi sought a way to fight them and once again capture each of the Bijuu. Time passed, and a plan was devised. The Jinchuuriki would be sacrificed for the greater good of the world, and with the deaths of nine individuals, an uneasy peace began.
As time continued, the villages began to truly restructure. In a peace that would last 80 years after the downfall of the Bijuu, the world would see the creation of a great many things. Technology was beginning to take root and before long the blossoms that grew from the tree of the advanced mind would bear fruit. A many great things came to be. A railroad between the vast many nations. Mechanical limbs to replace lost ones. Radios that could reach between villages. Everything seemed to be becoming less reliant on the shinobi. Only the need for them never truly vanished. As with the growth of time, also continued the growth of malice.
Xero progressed through the thick forest near the Ame-Iwa border. He had been looking for new recruits to join his crusade against the hidden shinobi villages, when things turned sour. That suburb didn't really matter did it? Ah well, it made no difference to the man, but it meant that there would be tightened security in the area for a while. Security he didn't feel like dealing with. The rogue moved swiftly, rain sliding off of his robe as he ran. He took advantage of the limited visibility caused by the heavy downpour.

His team had set out almost as soon as the reports of the mysterious rogue shinobi came in. They were the best at tracking. They had one of the best records. So, of course, they were the obvious choice when something needed to be done fast. His team, if any, should be able to find this bastard and take him out before he got up to no good.
Kaede trailed behind his squad, traveling through the heavy downpour like it was clear as day. He couldn't track for shit, but that was alright. That wasn't his job. His job was to act as backup; lurk behind, get in position for a quick and silent assassination, if his interference proved necessary. Sometimes, he didn't even get the chance to act.
When one squadmate fell back and tapped a message into his hand, Kaede ascended into the canopy, shadowing his squad from above. They had caught up to the rogue, whoever he was. Several senbon flew through the air at him, mostly meant to be a distraction.
The jounin found a good position and crouched down, Sharingan spinning to life to take in the scene below him. Things were about to get interesting.
Xero twitched as a senbon flew past his neck. So, the dogs had finally caught up. He stopped, turning once he landed on the next branch, facing the enemies that were following him. "So, you guys actually managed to keep up..." He said, analyzing the group behind his own mask. "Any chance you wanna ditch the charade of politics and join a righteous cause?" He asked rhetorically, holding out his arms to the sides. Of course they were intent on capturing or killing him, otherwise why even chase?

Kaede, up in his perch, couldn't help but roll his eyes. Really. Because rhetoric was a good choice when you had the best of the best on your tail. Either this guy was really strong, or really stupid. Maybe both, he couldn't quite tell. But he damn well wasn't going to get anywhere by trying to chat with the ANBU.
The only response the rogue received was another volley of senbon. One of his squadmates rushed forward to attack him in melee range, fist crackling with lightning. The other two continued to barrage him with weapons of every type, even sending a giant shuriken through the air at him.
Kaede watched every move with rapt attention, focusing on the rogue, learning how he moved and reacted.
Xero smirked, That's right dogs, come and get me. The rouge let out a loud whistle, triggering the Sonance of Silence. The whistle would grow in volume over a few seconds, after which it would leave those effected deaf for a short time. He dodged the projectiles by using the tree trunk as a springboard, flipping over the man that had come rushing for him. When the melee attacker reached for his ears, Xero gave him a swift punch to the gut. The agent keeled over, blood seemingly filling his throat and mouth from the simple attack.
With that one disabled, he turned his attention to the two that had been throwing things at him. The rogue Shunshined behind his second target, slitting her throat with a kunai while she was deafened. The third one seemed to have been able to escape the deafening sound, and had pointed a blade toward him. Xero wasn't fooled, he could tell the man was terrified by the way it was trembling. "Time to put the dogs down..." The rogue said menacingly, glaring into the other man's eyes through their masks.

One down. One dead. One that seemed to have frozen. Shit. Shit on a goddamn shit sandwich. This was not the easy mission they had all expected; this guy was way out of their league. Still, Kaede wasn't about to let his other squadmate go down without a fight.
He silently crept up behind the rogue, signaling his remaining comrade. Normally, he would want to go unnoticed so he could slit the guy's throat from behind. But with this rogue, he wasn't sure he wanted to get quite that close. Besides, he wasn't all that strong, or very good in melee range period. He formed hand seals, the tomoe in his eyes spinning. This was, arguably, his strongest technique, and pretty much his only shot at actually being able to take this guy down. As soon as the rogue turned and looked into his eyes, he would be snared. Uh, hopefully.
Xero began manipulating his shadow toward the cowering shinobi. He planned on using him to kill his reeling team member. The rogue hesitated, noticing the man redoubling his grip oh his weapon. It seemed the situation had changed. Normally ANBU were supposed to be good at controlling their body's reactions. Either the man was bluffing, or someone else had joined in and they were looking for him to react to the newcomer.
The criminal grunted in irritation, retreating to the branch where he left the other agent. The man would likely be recovering from the effects of his genjutsu shortly, and Xero wanted to finish him before the situation became three versus one again. He looked over toward the area he had retreated from. As it turned out there was indeed a newcomer, but the rogue only caught a glimpse before his world turned dark.
The genjutsu had taken him by surprise. Not only had this one managed to not alert him initially, but had also caught him in this technique. The rogue was a little impressed, but it was needless to say, "You'll need more than this to take me down." Xero closed his eyes, focusing on his other senses. He needed to get rid of the one next to him first before he could fight again. He shoved the shinobi off his branch with a kick, following up by throwing the kunai he had been holding. If all went well, the man would die as he hit the ground.
Xero then threw a shuriken toward the others while forming a chain of handseals with his other hand. Shortly, a bolt of lightning shot from his hand and arced toward the projectile. This would serve as the first link in the chain, sacrificing some of the jutsu's power for a greater chance at it hitting.

Shitsticks. This was bad. Most shinobi wouldn't know how to deal with a total lack of sight, but this guy just kept on going. Kaede froze for a moment, and then launched a barrage of kunai in the rogue's direction, exploding tags hanging off the ends. With a single hand seal, they exploded.
He probably hadn't managed to hurt the rogue in the explosion, but that hadn't been his intention to begin with. The sound oft he explosion and the scent of the smoke should disguise his movements. He dashed forward, making hand seals. Lightning crackled into existence as a sheath around his fist, and he lunged at the rogue, aiming to grab him 'round the neck and give him a good jolt. If he succeeded, he'd practically choke the bastard until the lightning dispersed.

The sudden explosion caused Xero's ears to ring. His balance had also been thrown off. It's like they're actually trying to kill me or something... He thought, taking a step to regain his composure. The rogue caught the faint sound of crackling a second too late. His hand catching Kaede's arm as the latter gripped his neck.
Xero felt minor burns spreading out from the point of impact. It hurt like a motherfucker. On the bright side, the pain caused the genjutsu to be dispelled. He couldn't afford to let himself get captured or killed now. The man's arms went limp, discreetly forming a handseal with one hand as they fell. His shadow would do the rest of the work, silently creeping up the ANBU shinobi to strangle him as well. This would be a test of their wills.

Kaede had to be honest, he was a little surprised that the plan he'd come up with on the fly had worked. He kept his grip on the rogue's neck, hoping to push him back, but that plan was foiled. He let out a shocked gasp as he was strangled, seemingly by invisible hands. Huh... was this guy maybe a Nara? He knew that the clan had something like that.
He was kind of at a loss as to what to do next, and for lack of a better idea, lunged forward and wrapped both his hands around the rogue's neck. It was going to be a battle of the wills here, and Kaede was determined to win it.

Xero was confident in his victory. Being relaxed meant he wasn't wasting any oxygen fighting his attacker. The other man had already lost air due to gasping, and was using his energy to keep his arms steady. The close proximity also meant that his jutsu would be stronger than if he had used it from range.
The rogue however, did not appreciate being shocked and burned. While his enemy was using both hands to choke him, Xero let one of the kunai in his sleeves slide into the hand that wasn't maintaining his own stranglehold. In a swift motion, the blade came to life with electricity as it came to bury itself in the man's chest.

Kaede's tomoe spun, alerted to the rogue's movement. He wasn't fast enough to avoid it completely, but he'd dodged to the side - so the kunai sank through his shoulder instead of his chest. The man hissed under his breath, resisting the urge to double over and scream - raiton chakra added a massive shitton of extra pain.
He slashed at the rogue with a kunai, for lack of a better plan. Kaede was very good at what he was supposed to do - capture the opponent in an illusion and then slit his throat. This was not exactly what he was supposed to do, and thus, he was at a bit of a loss. He'd not had an actual fight like this since, well, the chuunin exams...

Xero dodged backwards to avoid Kaede's slashes, his own knife still stuck in the man's shoulder. This one was proving to be a very large nuisance. He was getting fed up. It was time for him to end it. After defending against yet another slash, the rogues hands clasped together, forming the signature Nara handseal. An instant later several shadowy tendrils launched from the branch they were fighting on, aiming to pierce and paralyze his enemy.

Kaede was glancing constantly between the rogue and the shadows, trying to dodge as well as make sure he wasn't planning anything else nasty. All was going well, and then a misstep - a shadowy tendril pierced through his leg, and he toppled off the branch he'd been standing on.
He latched onto the branch, clinging to it with all his strength. But that left him vulnerable to the shadows, which veritably swarmed him. Motherfuckers. Kaede lost his grip and hurriedly channeled chakra to his feet, landing neatly. A moment later, he promptly toppled over, yelping. The multiple tendrils that had reached him had done a pretty damn good job of immobilizing him. His entire body hurt like hell, and there wasn't all that much he could do about it.
Xero looked around for the other shinobi before jumping down to face his enemy. He lifted the mans head by the hair. "Quite the sacrifice. Your allies are no where to be found..." The rogue taunted. "Why should someone like you serve people like them? Wouldn't it be more bountiful to put your skills to work, changing the world? Surely you can't forgive your comrades after they've abandoned you to me..."
