After the Fourth Great Shinobi World War ended, the world was experiencing a time of peace. The villages for once were able to live in relative harmony with one another as they rebuilt, and for once, all seemed to be well. The kage were able to live peaceful lives and soon began retiring, passing on the baton to the next generations. That is until an unknown virus infects the northern coast. The first to fall is the once powerful Raikage, Ay. While many thought this virus was a simple mutation of what may have well been the flu, no one would ever think of the destruction it would cause. Especially when it infected a certain Uzumaki Naruto.
With his death came the malice; with the malice came the destruction; with the destruction came the shinobi' revolt; and with the revolt came the sacrifices. The Bijuu became filled with malice that they sought to destroy the world. Shinobi sought a way to fight them and once again capture each of the Bijuu. Time passed, and a plan was devised. The Jinchuuriki would be sacrificed for the greater good of the world, and with the deaths of nine individuals, an uneasy peace began.
As time continued, the villages began to truly restructure. In a peace that would last 80 years after the downfall of the Bijuu, the world would see the creation of a great many things. Technology was beginning to take root and before long the blossoms that grew from the tree of the advanced mind would bear fruit. A many great things came to be. A railroad between the vast many nations. Mechanical limbs to replace lost ones. Radios that could reach between villages. Everything seemed to be becoming less reliant on the shinobi. Only the need for them never truly vanished. As with the growth of time, also continued the growth of malice.
Slaughter the rich bitch, wasn't that hard of a concept, really. What was annoying was that Kashii had lost her over the border from earth country to wind country. He hadn't sighted her to begin with, in all honesty, but he'd been tracking her. The spotted pelt of the feline beside him ruffled in the desert breeze, golden eyes gazing out as her master's did. One eye, reddish brown hair, about five five. Clothes weren't really stated, just that the woman preferred headwear. The details? He didn't have to care. Just that he needed this woman dead and had to bring back a souvenir as proof. He could decide on what that souvenir would be when he found her. The only problem was, there was a whole lotta desert out here. Biting his thumb, Kashii slammed his hand onto a stone in the sand, a wrinkly pink mole rat poofing into being. Before the creature could even land he was scooped up and placed inside Kashii's long jacket.
“Rufus, scope out chakra signatures and take us to the closest one.”
Kazuko had been torn away from her work at the gate to return an important item to a very influential man that would not deign to return and get it himself. The item was sealed in a scroll that was tucked away in the depths of her pack - hey, the guy lived in Taki no Kuni, it was a decently long trip, so she'd come prepared. Especially since she had to trek through desert first, and the deserts of Kaze no Kuni could be deadly if you didn't keep your head on straight.
The chuunin didn't anticipate any interference, as it wasn't well-known that the item hadn't returned home with its owner, but still, she focused on her surroundings, casting out her chakra in search of any other living thing. And she got something, right on the edge, flickering in and out of view. Well, she wouldn't be able to tell who or what it was unless she got closer... Her theory was that it was a fellow Suna shinobi returning from a mission, but one could never be too careful.
Once the molerat picked up a chakra source with his spindly whiskers that did not belong to a desert animal, the jounin stopped, gazing off in the direction the tiny pink paw pointed. So it was that way, huh? Kashii rolled his weight in the sand. It wasn't a favorable surface for running; he probably wouldn't be able to run at top speed. But, not-at-top-speed was still pretty damn fast. Dashing forward, he tested his speed and gait until he found something he could comfortably and quickly cross the blasted desert with, one eye on the wrinkled creature nestled against his neck in the stiff collar of his jacket. Cat dashed behind Kashii, wide paws more suited for sandy terrain.
Kashii's hands fished inside of his jacket as he drew nearer to his opponent. Wire traps would be useless here; the sand didn't have enough purchase to anchor his projectiles. He had to play a different strategy, and he reached behind his belt, withdrawing his jagged black knife. Perhaps some hair, the eye covering, maybe? The eye itself or something more fun.
“I can scent the female again.”
Gold eyes glanced down to the feline keeping pace. Between the two animals he'd find her quickly. A dog always had his tricks.
“Then let's be sure to say hello,” he said with a grin when the target flickered into his vision.
One thing she had noticed over the years was that people from the same village often had many similar qualities in their chakra signatures; she could identify that any person was or was not from Suna because she recognized that little bit of familiarity in all of them. This guy? Definitely not from Suna. His signature felt rough around the edges, not smooth, and overall was kind of... sharp. Kazuko didn't have a clue as to where he came from, but then again, she hadn't visited all that many places during her career of ninety percent paperwork.
Once she could really get a feel for him, her hackles raised; whoever the guy was, he had familiars with him, and he didn't seem very friendly. Worst of all, he was heading straight towards her. Slipping a hand into her pocket, she hooked a finger through the ring of a kunai. Her other hand dipped into a pocket as well, and she felt for the familiar texture of ink on paper. Usually, she drew up a few seals to have on hand, as you never knew when you were going to need one. This time, nada. Well, it had been an "emergency" mission and she hadn't really had time to prepare like she usually did. Eh, oh well. She'd figure it out.
The usually relaxed young woman was on high alert, although her slouched stature might make one think different. If this guy was after her - even though Kazuko couldn't even begin to fathom why - she was going to give him hell.
Gold eyes scrutinized the figure as he rapidly approached. Female? Check. One eye? Check. Ginger? Check. Hat? Check. Out in the desert? Check. She was his prey. The molerat in his jacket had completed his job and was dismissed. He spun the knife in his hand so that the edged blade faced outward from the inside of his right hand, not slowing down at all. His target was her throat. It would be an easy enough kill. Cat slowed, preparing her teeth and claws to be the follow-up to her master's attack. He had a good idea she'd dodge but in an area like this there wasn't really an option to hide and sneak up on her. He had his speed, that would be good.
As predicted, the blue-haired man went straight for her. Kazuko vaulted to the side, only to get hit with what appeared to be thirty pounds of angry cat. And her dodge was thus in vain, as the cat - who was digging its claws into her, much to her aggravation - knocked her back into the other shinobi's path.
She let out a loud yell as his knife sank into her good eye, and then the world went black. She was blind. The woman fell to her knees, whimpering softly, hands pressed over her eye - the knife still embedded. Tears fell from the marred organ.
Kazuko shoved the damnable cat off of her and huddled in the sand at the other shinobi's feet. Well. This day wasn't going all that swimmingly, was it?
Kashii hissed when the girl dodged. Yeah, he'd expected that, but even so. His feet dug awkwardly in the sand when he stalled his momentum to spin. Cat landed heavily into the female, eighteen hooked claws seeking flesh. Cat's jaws snapped audibly nearby the woman's ear, having missed her bite due to the flailing. Twisting, Kashii dragged his knife back up, this time successfully goring the woman. However, instead of his target—her throat—the onyx blade carved through her remaining eye, the collision with the socket of her skull nearly wrenching the weapon from his hand. He scream made his ears ring, and he backed off when she dropped, ready to take another dive at her. Blind and vulnerable; he'd expected this woman to put up so much more of a fight. The savannah cat screamed threateningly when her claws were torn from the woman's flesh and she was flung into the sand, rolling to her feet and charging for a second bite with her big teeth. Right before she launched, Kashii spotted the decoration around the kunoichi's throat and felt cold. Shit.
“Cat, wait!”
“WHAT,” she screeched her reply, tumbling into the woman in her poor attempt to brake on the unfamiliar terrain. Lashing her tail she stalked away, disappointed she couldn't bite. Kashii crouched in front of the woman, gripping her hair to pull her head upward and expose her neck. With the knife in his right hand, he slid it underneath the headband against her windpipe.
“Well fuck.”
“What?”
“We caught the wrong girl.”
Cat replied with nothing more than a sneeze. Kashii pulled the knife free and pushed the wounded woman into the sand. The target wasn't affiliated with Sunagakure at all. A part of him considered killing her now to keep her mouth shut, but at the same time he doubted she'd had enough time to get a good look at him—or his origins—to be able to tell anyone anything.
It was kind of hard to glare at somebody without any eyes to glare with. So instead, she ignored him and fished a roll of bandages out of her pack and started wrapping up the wounded eye so she wouldn't bleed everywhere. Kazuko carefully pulled her eye patch off and placed it in her bag, removing her headband from its place around her neck and tying it over both eye sockets instead. Then, she shakily got to her feet, still wincing.
Pointed toward his general direction, she offered him her hand with perfect precision. She might not be able to see in the traditional sense, but her ability to sense chakra would only improve even more now. "It's a damn shame you got my eye, but hell... Accidents happen, right?" There was no use in holding a grudge; what was done was done, and he hadn't meant to do it, so why be angry with him? Everything was chill, to be honest.
"...I'll have a hell of a time trying to come with an explanation as to how this happened..." Saying it was a blue-haired Iwa shinobi that had done it would only stir up needless trouble. "Any suggestions?"
notes I will forever remember the day where not only could I not grind you into a cactus, but you put Kashii into a position of weirdness he's never been in. “Why are you so chill?”
Kashii figured he should kill the girl just to be sure, but the fact that she completely ignored him after the slash and started to bandage herself caught him completely off-guard, and he hesitated. What? He backed away when she stood, wary of the hand she extended right in his direction.
"It's a damn shame you got my eye, but hell... Accidents happen, right?"
His wariness increased. This could be a trap. A glance at Cat—whom was more resistant to genjutsu than he was—revealed that she wasn't too concerned out of expectations of the female, puffed fur starting to fall back into place. So looking back to the blindfolded blind woman, Kashii took her hand with a shake, flicking the blood from his knife with the other hand. Well this felt extremely awkward.
"...I'll have a hell of a time trying to come with an explanation as to how this happened... Any suggestions?"
At this point he felt it would be wrong to kill her. Either she had impressive gall, didn't care, or this really was a trap. Gold eyes glanced around; he couldn't see or sense anything out of the ordinary, and he released the girl's hand. He could offer to beat her up, an enemy shinobi attacking her would be fun and be a good excuse, but then she'd be an even bigger liability. The next best thing would be the creature on the ground beside her.
“How 'bout a run-in with an animal?” he suggested.
Cat sauntered up to the female and rubbed against her so that the Suna shinobi was clear on who that “animal” would be.
“Does that mean I can bite her?”
“Don't kill her.”
“My self control is better than yours is.”
Kashii grunted in response but nothing more, awaiting the kunoichi's reply.
"Yeah, that's fine. I'm already beat up, a little more won't change much." She reached down and rubbed the cat's ears, grinning. Kazuko had always been a cat person, but her dad had never let her have one. Maybe it was time she acquired one. Heh. A seeing eye cat, she thought, which only made her grin wider. The other shinobi was already a bit wary of her attitude, and the grin probably wasn't helping anything.
"Just don't wreck me so hard I can't get back to the village, and we'll be fine, kitty cat."
"Yeah, that's fine. I'm already beat up, a little more won't change much."
The wolfish grin was mirrored by the feline grin when the “okay” was given. This girl didn't know what she was saying yes to. Cat allowed a purr to kick up in her throat and thrust her head into the woman's hand. She'd be biting the fuck out of it momentarily, may as well soak up the scratches first. Kashii, however, felt at even more unease when the woman grinned. What was this person? If he weren't on a job he'd take her for a drink.
"Just don't wreck me so hard I can't get back to the village, and we'll be fine, kitty cat."
“Got it,” with Cat's last syllable, she closed a set of four one-inch fangs into the hand that was petting her. The immediate recoil was used to her advantage and Cat launched directly at the kunoichi's face, sinking her hooked claws into the soft flesh, taking extra care to assault the side where the eye had been slashed. She found herself airborne before her teeth could bite in though, and tumbled into the sand. As soon as the savannah had her footing back, she lanched straight for the face again, this time sinking her teeth completely through the thin cheekflesh, the claws of all four paws raking down every available surface before getting dislodged once more.
Kashii watched in amusement as the spotted beast tore at the woman's flesh, the woman not fighting back outside of involuntary responses to the pain. Ah, but any more than this and she might be too “wrecked.” So, he snapped his fingers.
“Cat, that's enough. She looks the part.”
Cat gave a snarling hiss to dispel the energy she'd been putting into destruction and dropped to the ground, licking at the red that had dripped onto her fur.
Holy hell, this cat was a vicious little thing! Kazuko bit back a scream as her fangs sank into the hand the redhead had been using to pet her, automatically trying to get out of the beast's reach. And she couldn't help but knock the creature off her face when her claws sank into the woman's flesh. She did her damnedest to stay still, so there weren't any more accidents - it would just suck if the kitty ripped off an ear or something.
Never had she been so relieved in her life as when the feline released her. Holy. Shit. Breathing heavily, Kazuko righted herself and reached out to scratch under the cat's chin with the hand that hadn't gotten nearly mangled by her fangs. "Remind me... to never... actually get on your bad side."
After the mandatory scritching of the hellbeast (a term which she used rather affectionately), she struggled to her feet - and didn't succeed until after she'd stuck her wounded hand into the sand trying to brace herself. Yeah, that was not a mistake she was going to make again. "...I'd say it was nice meeting ya... but I'd mostly be lying. Well, goodbye to you... the cat and her shinobi." To be honest, she found the cat a bit more threatening than the man. She wasn't going to say that, but it was true.
"If I get lost out here and walk into a cactus, I'm gonna blame you." She pointed at the man, smirking. Of course, she wasn't going to get lost. But he didn't need to know that. Her goodbye being said, Kazuko turned and leisurely meandered in the general direction of the village. She wasn't going to head directly home until she was out of his sight.
"Remind me... to never... actually get on your bad side."
The bluenette chuckled.
“If you were on either of our bad sides, Red, you'd already be dead.”
He watched her struggle to get to her feet, more proud of Cat's handpawdiwork than concern for the kunoichi.
"...I'd say it was nice meeting ya... but I'd mostly be lying. Well, goodbye to you... the cat and her shinobi."
Mostly.
"If I get lost out here and walk into a cactus, I'm gonna blame you."
Kashii narrowed his golden gaze. Tempting tempting, but... Well, he'd already fucked up. Didn't want a mistake on his part to cause trouble.
“Oi, wait. Take this guy with you.” Reopening the wound he'd used to summon the beastie before, Kashii called his molerat, gripping the wrinkly creature by the scruff and placing him close enough to the female for his claws to latch on. “He can tell you if you're gonna walk into a cactus or not. Think of it as an apology. I'd take you out for a drink, Red, but I got a target to kill. Maybe next time.” Jutsu Used: Kuchiyose no Jutsu [Summoning Technique]
I summoned rufus not assed to link his shit it's in the sig.
Kazuko paused and turned back so she was facing him. "Hey, I don't need any help. I've roamed the deserts of Kaze no Kuni for my entire life... If I didn't know how to get to my village without sight, I would be a little worried. Keep your creature." She picked the rodent up off her sleeve and held him out to the man.
Then she turned to leave again. "Might take you up on that drink sometime. Seeya."
Kashii took the rejected rodent and rubbed his thumb on the wrinkly head, putting the little abomination on his shoulder. No skin off his nose, it was the thought that counts. Kashii had to say it was admirable that she could navigate her desert blind. He wouldn't trust himself to try and cross the mountains of Tsuchi no Kuni without his sight.
"Might take you up on that drink sometime. Seeya."
“I'll know how to find yeh,” he said, not offering a proper goodbye. He'd lost a lot of time messing with this chick, who knew where his target had gone now.
