After the Fourth Great Shinobi World War ended, the world was experiencing a time of peace. The villages for once were able to live in relative harmony with one another as they rebuilt, and for once, all seemed to be well. The kage were able to live peaceful lives and soon began retiring, passing on the baton to the next generations. That is until an unknown virus infects the northern coast. The first to fall is the once powerful Raikage, Ay. While many thought this virus was a simple mutation of what may have well been the flu, no one would ever think of the destruction it would cause. Especially when it infected a certain Uzumaki Naruto.
With his death came the malice; with the malice came the destruction; with the destruction came the shinobi' revolt; and with the revolt came the sacrifices. The Bijuu became filled with malice that they sought to destroy the world. Shinobi sought a way to fight them and once again capture each of the Bijuu. Time passed, and a plan was devised. The Jinchuuriki would be sacrificed for the greater good of the world, and with the deaths of nine individuals, an uneasy peace began.
As time continued, the villages began to truly restructure. In a peace that would last 80 years after the downfall of the Bijuu, the world would see the creation of a great many things. Technology was beginning to take root and before long the blossoms that grew from the tree of the advanced mind would bear fruit. A many great things came to be. A railroad between the vast many nations. Mechanical limbs to replace lost ones. Radios that could reach between villages. Everything seemed to be becoming less reliant on the shinobi. Only the need for them never truly vanished. As with the growth of time, also continued the growth of malice.
Name: Tonbogiri Nagae (“Long-Handled Dragonfly Cutter”) Type: Offensive Rank: S
Description || This double-edged longsword is an unusual choice in shinobi weaponry, considering the predisposition for most kenjutsu-style fighters to utilize katana or ninjato. Nevertheless, it is an extremely dangerous tool of war, provided its wielder possesses the experience to utilize its abilities to their full extent. The blade itself is composed entirely of a jet-black metal possessing an almost obsidian-like sheen. The four-foot length of the blade is unusual considering this hand-and-a-half style sword is designed to be usable with either one or two hands gripping the hilt. The larger than average size can make it difficult for unskilled or less physically-apt shinobi to use the weapon in one hand, though sufficient skill in kenjutsu can help mitigate the strength issue.
Upon closer inspection, one can observe kanji carved all along the flat of Tonbogiri’s blade. While normally extremely difficult to discern without a combination of prior knowledge of their existence and excellent lighting, these etching spew forth violet light that makes their presence known [ 体は剣で出来ている。]. The hilt of this sword measures a foot and a half in length, wrapped in layer upon layer of fraying linen strips. Said wrappings have discolored from years of extensive use, what was once white as snow now stained with dirt, seat, and blood to make a light shade of brown.
Tonbogiri Nagae possesses a telescopic hilt, thus the addition of Nagae to the weapon’s title. While the grip is normally confined to a set length, it can extend outward up to two meters and allow the sword to function as a long-bladed spear [it’s a spear yo, rejoice] or naginata. This permits an entirely new dimension of combat style with the legendary weapon, allowing the wielder to alternate between using a sword and a pole-arm to best fit the situation at hand. The expansion of the hilt occurs near-instantaneously, allowing the wielder to catch foes off-guard with a sudden, drastic increase in the weapon's effective range.
Abilities || The Sword of Conquerors, the Cleaver of Heavens, the Fang of the World - Tonbogiri Nagae has gone through all of these titles throughout its considerable lifespan, though such titles have since been lost to time. It is the sword that can cut through anything without really cutting anything. Its name stems from a legend describing the first time it was brought into glorious combat; a general drew his blade and held it aloft, preparing an epic monologue to rally his troops against a superior force. As the sun rose over the hilltops, a dragonfly was said to have landed on the very point of the sword’s blade. Almost instantaneously, the minuscule pressure the dragonfly’s weight exerted on the weapon split the insect into two pieces.
Tonbogiri Nagae bears many characteristics that were possessed by the original incarnation of the weapon, namely its durability and keen edge. The jet-black metals folded into the steel of the blade render it as close to indestructible as mankind has ever seen in a weapon. Only the most legendary or powerful of blades possess the edge required to leave so much as a ding in this ancient sword’s steel. Even in its base state, Tonbogiri Nagae exhibits cutting power unrivaled by any other mundane blade in known existence. A swing with only moderate power behind it allows Setsuna to cleave through iron with the ease of slicing through bare flesh. Backed by a powerful blow, the sword can cleanly pass through steel at the wielder’s whim; only the finest blades can withstand the tremendous cleaving power of this sword, and even fewer can withstand a repeated assault by Tonbogiri Nagae.
The symbols engraved into the flat of the blade are not just for show; they are actually a complex series of seals that react to any chakra stemming from a source other than its wielder. It is these seals that permit Tonbogiri Nagae its most unusual traits, and that are responsible for its lofty titles passed down through the ages. The seals generate a sort of invisible aura extending roughly three inches around the entirely of the longsword’s cutting edge; as the aura slightly extends beyond the blade, one does not have to make physical contact with the steel in order to impart its effects. Ordinarily the aura is not only invisible but inert, producing no noticeable effects to the naked eye. However, when chakra-laden matter passes through the threshold of this barrier the seals light up and the true abilities of Tonbogiri Nagae manifest. Note that wielding this weapon is only made possible by the way in which this aura is extruded. One may grip the pommel of this blade without fear, as only chakra that comes into contact with the weapon itself is severed by Tonbogiri's abilities.
The aura reacts to chakra in the same manner that electric charges possessing the same charge interact. Just as electric charges with the same polarity repel from each other, this invisible pushes against any chakra that enters within range of its edge. In a sense, Tonbogiri Nagae rejects any chakra that it comes into contact with and bends it to its well. These chakra-statured materials are not merely pushed in the direction away from the sword; instead such substances are split in half before even coming into contact with the weapon. The aura wedges itself into the matter and pushes it in two direction over the flats of the blade, cleaving it asunder and leaving behind only materials which have not been infused with chakra. Not only can this be used to effortlessly cleave through ninjutsu that produce armors of stone, ice, or even metal, but it also can “sever” intangible materials produced through ones shakra. Gouts of flame, bolts of lightning, even gales of wind produced via chakra-intensive means can be sliced in twain by Tonbogiri Nagae’s cutting edge.
However, this abiltiy to split chakra is by no means inherently beneficial to the wielder. Cutting through a fireball the size of a city block might be useful, but in the end all that accomplishes it creating two slightly smaller fireballs ready to incinerate every fiber of your being. Thus, in order for Tonbogiri to truly shine, it must be in the hands of a kenjutsu master who is fully capable of not only swinging the blade, but placing each blow in the most advantageous position for the wielder. More importantly, however, is the effect the Tonbogiri has on its owner. Merely gripping the blade disrupts the flow of chakra within the wielder's circulatory system, heavily impairing ones ability to shape and project chakra. Those unprepared for this side-effect are rendered completely incapable of shaping chakra; however, those who have had years to master Tonbogiri are minimally impacted, simply requiring that they expend a minimal amount of excess chakra to perform their chakra-intensive techniques. Note that those capable on calling upon "higher-level" chakras, such as those capable of manifesting the abilities of tailed beasts of senjutsu, are able to ignore the negative effects of this weapon while drawing on said forms of chakra.
