After the Fourth Great Shinobi World War ended, the world was experiencing a time of peace. The villages for once were able to live in relative harmony with one another as they rebuilt, and for once, all seemed to be well. The kage were able to live peaceful lives and soon began retiring, passing on the baton to the next generations. That is until an unknown virus infects the northern coast. The first to fall is the once powerful Raikage, Ay. While many thought this virus was a simple mutation of what may have well been the flu, no one would ever think of the destruction it would cause. Especially when it infected a certain Uzumaki Naruto.
With his death came the malice; with the malice came the destruction; with the destruction came the shinobi' revolt; and with the revolt came the sacrifices. The Bijuu became filled with malice that they sought to destroy the world. Shinobi sought a way to fight them and once again capture each of the Bijuu. Time passed, and a plan was devised. The Jinchuuriki would be sacrificed for the greater good of the world, and with the deaths of nine individuals, an uneasy peace began.
As time continued, the villages began to truly restructure. In a peace that would last 80 years after the downfall of the Bijuu, the world would see the creation of a great many things. Technology was beginning to take root and before long the blossoms that grew from the tree of the advanced mind would bear fruit. A many great things came to be. A railroad between the vast many nations. Mechanical limbs to replace lost ones. Radios that could reach between villages. Everything seemed to be becoming less reliant on the shinobi. Only the need for them never truly vanished. As with the growth of time, also continued the growth of malice.
Whilst shinobi are a diverse bunch, the entirety of their skill sets can be boiled down to a few basic concepts - most commonly ninjutsu, genjutsu, and taijutsu. Characters here choose specializations called Paths where they are first created, which reflect the strengths in their combat styles. Each path only reflects proficiency in a specific concentration of the shinobi arts, providing them superior skills in said concentration compared to characters whose focus is in another area. Choice in path additionally determines the special abilities that characters are able to acquire, and thus dramatically impact the manner in which their skills evolve. The three main paths and the techniques the encompass are as follows:
Path of the Mind - This path represents a shinobi's mental discipline. Those who follow this path often rely on clever tactics as opposed to powerful techniques to gain the upper hand in combat, and develop their skills through years of careful observation and study.
Notable Trait: Chakra Control Related Shinobi arts: Genjutsu, Fuuinjutsu Medical Ninjutsu
NOTE: Nintaijutsu may only be used by shinobi who do not have Path of the Body or Path of the Soul as their weakest Path. Characters may use a special ability to gain proficiency in Nintaijutsu to counteract this.
NOTE: Shinobi with Path of the Body as their weakest Path cannot use advanced weaponry (e.g. swords) without using a special ability to gain proficiency.
Path of the Soul -
Notable Traits: Chakra capacity Related Shinobi Arts: Shape Ninjutsu, Elemental Ninjutsu, Barrier Ninjutsu, Summoning
All characters initially choose one of the three paths listed above; this path serves as their Primary Path, acting like a passive boost to all skills and traits that it encompasses. However, these bonuses do not necessarily mean that your character will be superior in all related skills to shinobi who chose a different path; they instead represent your character's latent potential for learning and advancing in these areas. For instance, a shinobi who chose the Path of the Mind can trump one who chose the Path of the Body in physical combat depending on their choice in special abilities and how they developed in-character.
Characters then select one of the two paths not chosen initially to serve as their weakness, called their Weakest Path. Skills in this domain do not come as easily to said character, meaning they have to work exceptionally hard to excel in this area.
The paths not selected as the strength of weakness of the character is then chosen as their Secondary Path; whilst not their strongest area, they can excel in skills that fall under this category with much greater ease than they do those represented by their weakest path.
Think of it like this: a Path of the Soul user will have a moderately larger pool of chakra than followers of the Mind or Body. However if either of the latter chose to take chakra capacity as a special ability, they would likely have more chakra than the soul user. Consequently, if a Soul user also took chakra capacity as a special ability he would still have more chakra than either path.
The Paths chosen by a character determine the experience cost for purchasing new techniques at differing shinobi ranks. Jutsu whose typing (ninjutsu, genjutsu, etc) matches a character's primary Path are less expensive to purchase, whereas techniques matching their weakness are far more costly. Details about purchasing new jutsu can be found HERE.
