After the Fourth Great Shinobi World War ended, the world was experiencing a time of peace. The villages for once were able to live in relative harmony with one another as they rebuilt, and for once, all seemed to be well. The kage were able to live peaceful lives and soon began retiring, passing on the baton to the next generations. That is until an unknown virus infects the northern coast. The first to fall is the once powerful Raikage, Ay. While many thought this virus was a simple mutation of what may have well been the flu, no one would ever think of the destruction it would cause. Especially when it infected a certain Uzumaki Naruto.
With his death came the malice; with the malice came the destruction; with the destruction came the shinobi' revolt; and with the revolt came the sacrifices. The Bijuu became filled with malice that they sought to destroy the world. Shinobi sought a way to fight them and once again capture each of the Bijuu. Time passed, and a plan was devised. The Jinchuuriki would be sacrificed for the greater good of the world, and with the deaths of nine individuals, an uneasy peace began.
As time continued, the villages began to truly restructure. In a peace that would last 80 years after the downfall of the Bijuu, the world would see the creation of a great many things. Technology was beginning to take root and before long the blossoms that grew from the tree of the advanced mind would bear fruit. A many great things came to be. A railroad between the vast many nations. Mechanical limbs to replace lost ones. Radios that could reach between villages. Everything seemed to be becoming less reliant on the shinobi. Only the need for them never truly vanished. As with the growth of time, also continued the growth of malice.
If there was one thing to say about Yuu's aim, it was that he always hit his mark. Unfortunately, this was not always a good thing. Kaede looked ready to bolt. If the reaction to his revelation didn't want to make Yuu stop the male from bolting, it was the tears he spotted falling that did.
“Wait!” he said, reaching out and snatching Kaede's left wrist to keep him from getting away. He pulled the thinner male a little closer to indicate Yuu was not going to let him flee. “Don't run.”
you take your needles and sew my mouth shut but you will never hear the last of me
Kaede angrily swiped at his face with the cloth of his armband, wiping the tears away - in vain, because they wouldn't stop falling, goddamnit. He'd been just about to take off sort of in the direction of his home village when Yuu grabbed him, drawing a startled and slightly indignant and very unmanly squeak out of the tokujo.
Kaede tried to pull his wrist from the boy's grasp, but quickly realized that he was not the stronger of the two and flat out gave up. "What?" he asked, completely and totally deflated.
If anything, Kaede seemed to respond worse. However, Yuu's grip was strong—it had to be to fire a bow—and the Ame nin was unable to pull free from his grasp.
“I'm right, aren't I?”
That didn't get a happy response, and despite his better judgment, he pulled the multicolored-person closer. Yuu could remember all the times he needed a hug, and he spoke quieter.

"Y-yeah..." he muttered under his breath. Kaede looked and felt very much like a cornered animal; his futile struggles against Yuu's grip made that quite apparent. "W-what are you going to-"
His question ended rather abruptly as the other boy pulled him into a hug. Kaede went stiff as a board, standing stock still, completely and totally uncomfortable with this turn of events. Holy hell, what was going on here? And then Yuu spoke up again, and Kaede stared at him - finally noting, with the boy's words, the traits that he had tried so hard to hide visible in the Iwa shinobi. "Y-you're...?"
At the sound of the Uchiha's voice being so close to his ear, Yuu very abruptly let go, pushing the older shinobi away by the shoulders and stepping back two paces. Did it again.
“Ah... sorry, um... yea, I am.” And yet it felt even more awkward, but this person had become even more interesting. “Do you wanna talk? I've got some pretty fun stories I'm never able to share with anyone, so I'm sure you do too.”
Actually, Yuu would like to have a person like himself as a friend. He could talk to Okami about things but... there were just some things the mutt wouldn't ever be able to understand. Friends were good to have, especially ones who understood your troubles. This shinobi probably wouldn't be keen on befriending a shinobi of the Rock; it wasn't as if Iwa's shinobi made a friendly name for themselves. But not all of us are like that.

When Yuu released him, Kaede shook himself, as if the motion would help clear his mind. Unfortunately, it didn't, because he remained just as emotionally unbalanced as he had been before. He managed to stem the flow of his tears and furiously rubbed his face until it was red and raw, trying to remove the evidence of his minor breakdown.
He didn't quite know what to make of Yuu - especially his touchiness - but learning that they shared such a huge and important personal transformation led him to feel a sort of kinship for the boy. To his knowledge, he didn't know anybody else who identified as a gender that they weren't born as, so this was a really unique opportunity and he had to stick around and take advantage of it. "I don't know if I'd really call any of my stories 'fun'..." he muttered, but shook his head and did his best to manufacture a small smile in place of his frown.
He reached into his pocket yet again - sugar was his drug of choice, and he had plenty of candies scattered about his multitude of pockets - and offered a piece of the spherical citrus candy to Yuu before popping a few more in his mouth. He was so going to have a sugar rush later.

Kaede seemed to be getting a hold of himself better, at least. That was good. Yuu didn't do well with crying. He didn't like it when people cried and would always try to make them feel better, even if it was a stranger. Or, as had happened once before, someone he was supposed to consider an “enemy.”
"I don't know if I'd really call any of my stories 'fun'..."
“That's alright,” Yuu said, accepting the candy he was given. He examined it for a moment, and after noting that the Ame nin ate one just like it, decided to trust it and popped it in his mouth. An interesting flavor; the medic didn't think that Iwa had candies like this. Perhaps he could find out when he returned.
It was a thin line anyway from this perspective, and Yuu crossed the border between the countries, putting his back against the trees Kaede had been standing at not five minutes ago and slid to a sit on the ground, crossing his ankles.
“If you don't mind getting a little dusty, why don't you sit down?”
Digging in his bag for one of his water bottles, Yuu offered one to Kaede.
“I'd like to hear what tales you have to tell. It's only fair that I share some too, right?”

A little hesitantly, Kaede slid down to the ground next to Yuu, leaning back against the trees. Their proximity was a little uncomfortable for him, and he was still fidgety and nervous - and probably would be for the rest of this encounter. He hadn't been this close to another person outside of a professional situation in a long time, and it was going to take a lot of getting used to.
He drew his knees up to his chest and rested his arms atop them after accepting the proffered water bottle. He stared at the ground, uncertain of what he could say to Yuu that would discourage the boy from asking him to tell stories but wasn't rude as all hell. He didn't want to alienate this potential friend, but - he'd never really told anybody about any of his past and he didn't know how to start doing so with a complete and total stranger.
Well, the blunt approach was probably best. Or, at least, the quickest. And it would allow him to remain vague enough that it wouldn't dredge up any specific memories he was trying to keep locked away. "I don't really talk about myself. My past isn't pretty, it isn't fun, and I don't want to relive any of it. Sorry. I'm a pretty good listener, though, if you want to talk..."

"I don't really talk about myself. My past isn't pretty, it isn't fun, and I don't want to relive any of it. Sorry. I'm a pretty good listener, though, if you want to talk..."
Yuu hummed at that response, clicking the hard candy against his teeth.
“I can respect that. My parents didn't react kindly to me, either. Bad memories hurt. But it allowed my brother and I to get close, so some good came of it.”
Yuu stared upward at the leaves of the tree.
“The only thing you can really do is keep moving forward and find people you can lean on. It's not something that can be “fixed” or beaten out of you. Trust me, I'm a medic, I've looked into it. It's just a part of who we are.”

Kaede laughed sharply. "'Didn't react kindly' is the fuckin' understatement of the year in regards to my parents. They hated me anyway. It was just one more excuse to-" He cast a sideways glance at Yuu and (badly) disguised the fact that he hadn't finished his sentence by taking a long sip of water. The boy felt trustworthy to him; Kaede wanted to open up and form some sort of meaningful relationship with somebody that extended further than having each other's backs in the field, but he was so damn scared of getting hurt again that a large part of him just wasn't willing to try it. "I haven't had any contact with my family for nine years."
He nodded slowly as Yuu continued talking. He was moving forward. Kind of. At a snail's pace. But he didn't have anybody to lean on... Didn't want to admit to himself that he needed somebody, really. Kaede turned away friendship like it was poison, and he wasn't making huge strides in the direction of opening up and actually trying to make friends for once in his goddamn life. Maybe Yuu would be able to coax him into relaxing enough to really talk.
For the moment, however, he pushed those thoughts away and changed the subject. "You're a medic? That's pretty neat. I always thought it would be cool to be able to heal people, but turns out it's just really not my thing."

Just when the Ame nin had started to open up a little, he changed the subject.
“If you like, I can give you your own autographed band-aid,” the medic said with a grin. Reaching across, he ruffled the opposing male's hair, a friendly gesture he used on people he wanted to cheer up. “Is that why you flinched,” he asked a little more solemnly, “when I touched you?”
Yuu could understand being hit, as well. It was a thing of the past now, but Yuu no longer visited his parents so often. Even if they were more accepting now, the past couldn't be erased and neither could the memories.

Kaede cracked an actual grin at the boy's silly line. "Heh, I won't say no to a souvenir." He wasn't really expected the boy to pull out a signed bandaid and give it to him, but at the same time he figured Yuu might actually have a couple just so he could use that line on people. The thought made him laugh.
And then the mood turned away from lightheartedness again as the boy reached out to ruffle his hair. Kaede had to will himself not to flinch back at his touch, and although he didn't quite succeed, he hadn't struck out at Yuu for touching him. Still couldn't bring himself to relax, or to lean into the touch, but... progress was progress, right? "Um, yeah. There's - a lot more to it than that but... I don't want to talk about it." He kept saying that - that he didn't want to talk - and then he kept right on, well, talking. Damn the Iwa shinobi and his urge to get close to him.
Yuu was going to end up getting something out of Kaede that he'd never told anyone if this kept up. And he really didn't want to get on to that subject. Like, really. "Could we.. maybe talk about something else?"

"Heh, I won't say no to a souvenir."
Yuu pulled his bag more to the front, opening it and feeling for the loose box of bandages. Finding it, he picked it open and pulled one loose, handing it to his companion.
“It's not signed, but it's blue with stars. Works just as well.”
Closing his bag, Yuu pushed it aside, the air becoming a little darker. Oops.
"Um, yeah. There's - a lot more to it than that but... I don't want to talk about it. Could we.. maybe talk about something else?”
Yuu hummed. If Kaede didn't want to talk about it, that was fine.
“Okay. How about your hair?” he asked. “What made you pick all those colors?”

Kaede took the bandaid and inspected it. "Snazzy. I like it." He stuck it in one of his emptier pockets, where it wouldn't get coated with candy dust or end up sticky or something. It felt kind of stupid to think it, but he was going to keep the bandaid and - well, not exactly treasure it, per se, but keep it as a reminder that not all people sucked completely.
He was grateful that Yuu didn't make any fuss about switching the topic of conversation. Many people would have pressed and pressed till the Uchiha snapped and did something he would probably regret.
"Teenage rebellion, at first. Knew it'd piss off the family that I wasn't acting respectable. And I liked it, so it stuck. These are my favorite colors. What about yours - dyed or natural?" Instinctively, he would say dyed, but he'd met people with natural colors that were pretty far out there, so he was curious. It was a really gorgeous shade of purple.

"Teenage rebellion, at first. Knew it'd piss off the family that I wasn't acting respectable. And I liked it, so it stuck. These are my favorite colors. What about yours - dyed or natural?"
“Natural,” Yuu responded. “My brother and I have the same color hair. We're not sure who it came from, neither of our parents have lilac hair. Sticks out like a sore thumb in the field, and that's why I wear the hat. I'd dye it but... I don't know, I'm fond of the color.”
Yuu pulled at some of the long hair on the side, pulling it in front of his eyes to look at it. When he was younger, he used to wear it long, before he identified as “he.” After becoming a genin he'd cut it off himself with scissors and never let it grow back. He looked like a half-plucked chicken after that, too, for the next month until some of it grew back in and he could get it properly cut by someone who knew what the hell they were doing.
“So... what were you rebelling about? Did you want a puppy and your parents wouldn't let you have one?” he asked with a grin, speaking in a joking tone.
