After the Fourth Great Shinobi World War ended, the world was experiencing a time of peace. The villages for once were able to live in relative harmony with one another as they rebuilt, and for once, all seemed to be well. The kage were able to live peaceful lives and soon began retiring, passing on the baton to the next generations. That is until an unknown virus infects the northern coast. The first to fall is the once powerful Raikage, Ay. While many thought this virus was a simple mutation of what may have well been the flu, no one would ever think of the destruction it would cause. Especially when it infected a certain Uzumaki Naruto.
With his death came the malice; with the malice came the destruction; with the destruction came the shinobi' revolt; and with the revolt came the sacrifices. The Bijuu became filled with malice that they sought to destroy the world. Shinobi sought a way to fight them and once again capture each of the Bijuu. Time passed, and a plan was devised. The Jinchuuriki would be sacrificed for the greater good of the world, and with the deaths of nine individuals, an uneasy peace began.
As time continued, the villages began to truly restructure. In a peace that would last 80 years after the downfall of the Bijuu, the world would see the creation of a great many things. Technology was beginning to take root and before long the blossoms that grew from the tree of the advanced mind would bear fruit. A many great things came to be. A railroad between the vast many nations. Mechanical limbs to replace lost ones. Radios that could reach between villages. Everything seemed to be becoming less reliant on the shinobi. Only the need for them never truly vanished. As with the growth of time, also continued the growth of malice.
"Ooh. Well, you might wanna be careful 'bout how much you look. An' it is really soft. So are my ears. They're like real cat fur,"
Yuu couldn't remember the last time he'd petted a cat. And she looked really pettable... but she was a person, not a pet. He couldn't just—
"If you wanna look or touch, all you have to do is ask. I don't mind, really."
And there it was, permission without the question needing to be asked.
“Well if you don't mind... I do want to look. I've never seen anything like you before, so I find you interesting. But food first.”
Putting a hand in his pocket, Yuu fingered the coin Chinatsu had given him for a moment, withdrawing it and unfastening his cloak with the same hand. In the other he held his bow vertically so as not to accidentally bump people with it.
“Good evening, Yuu greeted the man who came to seat them, and held up the coin, “The Tsuchikage, Chinatsu, has offered to put our bill on his tab. That's okay, isn't it?”
Usually one didn't pay before eating, but Yuu didn't want to eat first and then be stuck with a place that didn't accept the coin as proof and made them wash dishes until their fingers bled. The waiter took the coin, miffed that Yuu did not use “-sama” to address the lord kage, but was satisfied to find the coin to be the real artifact, at least.

"Yeah, you can look. I really don't mind. But if you pull my tail I'll cut you~" she chirped cheerfully, said appendage smacking the chuunin for the umpteenth time. "People like to try to hurt me 'cause they think it's funny." She said it so casually that she might have been commenting on the weather. Sadly enough, Chi was used to that sort of behavior. It bothered her, but in a routine way that just made her sigh and shake her head.
She stayed silent throughout Yuu's exchange with the waiter, and followed him eagerly to their table, where she slid into a seat. The grin on her face was wide and happy. Nobody had paid for a meal for her since... Well, since ever, unless the meals at the orphanage counted, which she didn't think they did. And to have it be the lord Tsuchikage himself... Well, that was just crazy. He seemed like a really nice guy.
“When we were genin, Chinatsu-sensei would take my teammate and myself here whenever we did well on his exams. The food is good; I haven't actually come here in a long time.”
Yuu didn't bother to look at the menu; he always got rice and chicken with noodles. No reason to change an already delicious thing. When she seemed confused on what to get, he offered suggestions.
“They have a beef bowl mixed with noodles and some vegetables; if you like meat, then you would like that.”

Chi looked at him with wide eyes. "The Tsuchikage was your sensei?" she asked in a tone of awe. "That's so cool." She would have loved to have a kage as her sensei. Unfortunately, she was stuck with a regular old jounin. Not that there was anything wrong with that, of course. But it just wasn't as cool.
"Mm, that sounds good. I'll get that. Thanks for the suggestion, Yuu!" She grinned, showing off her pointed canines. She was really looking forward to the meal. Chi could cook just fine - well enough for her, anyway - but nothing compared to good restaurant fare. Yum.
“He wasn't the Tsuchikage when he was my sensei. We already were chuunin when he went into office.”
Yuu was interested in that smile when she grinned at him. She wasn't the first person he'd met with fangs, no, shishou had a particular favorite mutt who also sported pointed canines; and Yuu himself was close personal friends with a fangy wolf as well. But her seemed... more delicate. Thinner. Idly, he wondered how sharp they were. He just as quickly pushed that thought out of his mind, and they placed their orders when the waiter returned.
“So where else do you want to go, Chiyoko? And how long will you stay? I can point you towards some inns that will be cheap. It's late, so you'll probably want to do more of your “sightseeing” tomorrow.”
One would be surprised how often people go to a shinobi village to sightsee, especially since railways began their use. But she said she was looking for family, leaving Yuu inclined to believe he'd be seeing her a lot during her stay.

"Still cool. Was he a good sensei?" she asked, curiosity plainly written on her face. To Chi, the kages were enigmas; she couldn't imagine the Kusakage teaching a team of genin. The thought was just - foreign. "If he was strong enough to become the kage, then I bet he made you really strong too, right?"
She pondered his questions for a few moments. To be honest, Chi hadn't thought this trip out very well... She'd imagined she'd just show up and stay with the Kamizurus and learn about the bees. The girl hadn't even considered exploring the village or sightseeing. "Uhm... I mostly just want to be with the clan. I don't have anybody at home to teach me about the bees, so I wanted to spend my time learning," she informed him. "And I was kind of hoping I could stay at someone's home. I don't want to be alone if I don't have to be... Could I maybe sleep on your couch, or something? I'm just gonna stay a few weeks, i-it's not like I'm going to move in or anything..."
She looked concerned, afraid that Yuu was going to reject her and demand she stay at an inn. While that wasn't really a problem - she'd brought pretty much every ryo to her name with her - like she'd said, she didn't want to be alone the way she had been for most of her life. Hopefully, the boy would understand that.

"Still cool. Was he a good sensei? If he was strong enough to become the kage, then I bet he made you really strong too, right?"
“Yeah, he was,” Yuu replied with a grin, “I made it to chuunin, didn't I? I wouldn't say I'm “really” strong... but I do have my strengths.”
Yuu glanced to his mahogany bow. Really, he'd like his healing skills to be as good as his archery, if not even better. But there wasn't the greatest supply of injured people to practice on. Helping out at the hospital meant your usual cuts and scrapes, broken bones now and then. The shinobi section of the hospital had more grievous wounds sometimes; training accidents or returns from missions. It was kind of bad to say that they were good practice, but it was the truth. Yuu wanted to know exactly what to do in any situation. That was one reason he preferred being a field medic. The more experience gained, the better healer he would be. But to combine it with his archery... well, he had his ideas. Yuu never liked taking kills; killing was not why he became a shinobi. It wasn't that he couldn't, he just didn't.
"Uhm... I mostly just want to be with the clan. I don't have anybody at home to teach me about the bees, so I wanted to spend my time learning,"
Yuu hummed, taking a sip of his drink.
“Unlike many of my clanmates, I don't quite rely heavily on my bees. I can teach you about them, but my brother fights almost solidly with them, so I bet he'd be a better teacher in that regard than I.”
Yuu idly wondered when the food would come. He wasn't especially hungry as it was but he'd already ordered. Besides, leftovers were the best thing ever; one less meal he'd have to make later.
"And I was kind of hoping I could stay at someone's home. I don't want to be alone if I don't have to be... Could I maybe sleep on your couch, or something? I'm just gonna stay a few weeks, i-it's not like I'm going to move in or anything..."
Yuu paused, setting his drink glass down. He was sure there were a few in his clan that would be glad to take her in, but staying with the medic wouldn't be a good idea for the girl; for both of their sake's.
“If you don't want to stay alone, I can understand that. But you shouldn't ask to stay with a boy you just met less than an hour ago,” he said, maintaining eye contact. “I know a couple older women who might be happy to take you in during your stay. After we're done eating maybe I can take you to meet them. I can show you which home is mine so that if you want to look around tomorrow, I can take you.”
Being a guide for a foreigner generally meant you were their babysitter until they left the village. That was fine with Yuu; it could be interesting.

"I wish I was strong enough to be a chuunin. But all I can do is spit water at people and summon like five bees. I'm not very good at being a shinobi." She frowned. There was only so much she could improve upon by herself. Without anyone to train with, her ability to learn new skills was severely hampered. That was one of the reasons she had been so desperate to come meet her clan - so she could learn some useful things. "I want to learn how to use some sort of weapon, but I haven't been able to find a good teacher in Kusa." Chi glanced at Yuu's bow. Something like that would be cool. She wasn't exactly a close-range fighter, so a close-range weapon wouldn't do her any good... But she didn't want to impose and ask him to teach her how to shoot a bow. Not to mention that that would require her to get a bow, and she was sure that a good one wouldn't be cheap.
"Would he mind teaching me? I-I don't want to be any trouble..." Of course, she had considered the possibility that the clan wouldn't want anything to do with her. That would be disappointing, but wouldn't be entirely unexpected, given that she was foreign in more ways than one. And the others might not be as nice as Yuu. "I would teach myself, only I don't have any scrolls or anything explaining how to use the bees. Until a couple months ago, I didn't know they existed or that I could use them at all." She wasn't going to elaborate more than that, unless he asked her directly. The story was kind of weird, after all...
The waiter finally arrived with their food, and Chi's mouth watered when he set the bowl of meat, noodles, and vegetables in front of her. She was tempted to dig right in and wolf it down, but she didn't want to be rude, especially not in front of the first member of her family that she'd ever met.
Yuu's response to her last question confused her a bit, and she tilted her head to the side. "Huh? Why?" She already felt pretty comfortable with Yuu; he was friendly, and didn't seem like a creeper, and he wanted to pet her ears, so she didn't see why she couldn't stay with him. Chi looked at him with her big, sad eyes. "Please, please let me stay with you..."

"I wish I was strong enough to be a Chūnin. But all I can do is spit water at people and summon like five bees. I'm not very good at being a shinobi."
“You're just young,” Yuu commented. “You have plenty to learn and time to do it. Not everyone learns at the same pace. I've met shinobi who were powerful at your age, but I've also met genin in their thirties, and there's nothing wrong with that.”
Chiyoko's azure gaze seemed to wander off to his right, and Yuu looked to the bow propped against the half-wall.
"I want to learn how to use some sort of weapon, but I haven't been able to find a good teacher in Kusa."
Yuu's gaze stayed on the bow. It was really hard to find someone who used a bow to teach him how, so he could understand that. He had mixed feelings about offering to help her too much, however. She was from a different shinobi village, after all.
"Would he mind teaching me? I-I don't want to be any trouble..."
“Yes; Kyo does whatever his otouto asks him to,” Yuu replied with a slight smile. The siblings' relationship had pulled a 180 since six years ago for the better, and despite trying to kill each other sometimes still, they were very close.
"I would teach myself, only I don't have any scrolls or anything explaining how to use the bees. Until a couple months ago, I didn't know they existed or that I could use them at all."
Yuu blinked. How curious. Although, he'd grown up with the Kamizuru learning how to control his bees. He didn't know this girl's story. It might be an interesting thing to ask her the next time they met, considering she said she'd be here a while. Thanking the server when the meal finally came, there was a moment of silence before Chiyoko spoke again.

Chi nodded, but she didn't looked placated in the least. She had been a genin for a year, and she was hardly stronger than she was when she left the academy. "If I had the resources, I'm sure I could be stronger. But nobody cares about an orphan freak." She gave him a sad smile and shrugged. Children from prominent clans, and those birthed by powerful shinobi, got all the attention, while those like her got little to nothing. That was just the way the world worked. And it sucked.
When he denied her request again, Chi's face fell. She looked away from him, down into her bowl of noodles, tears welling up in her eyes. Did he really dislike the thought of her camping out on his couch that much? She didn't know what to say to him, and she didn't want to cause a scene in the middle of a busy restaurant on her first day in Iwagakure, but she couldn't keep the tears held back. The girl wasn't very good at controlling her emotions, as one could plainly see. "Yuu..."
It was odd how insistent the young girl was. She couldn't be that naïve, could she? Or maybe she wasn't being naïve at all. Either way, Yuu couldn't let her stay with him, and he focused on eating his chicken when she looked down at her food. He didn't look up again until he heard Chiyoko say his name in a tone that implied that she was not okay.
"Yuu..."
Looking back at her, he realized her face was wet with tears, and the medic felt his ears burn. Glancing around to ensure no one noticed he made the poor girl cry, he leaned in closer with a hushed voice.
“Now, don't be like that, Chiyoko-san. You can see me all day tomorrow.” It didn't seem to be helping. “We'll get you someone who can look after you tonight, okay?”

"I-I don't want to stay with just anyone. I want to stay with you," she insisted, the tears falling faster, right into her bowl of food - which she hadn't touched yet, too occupied by her feelings being hurt. "Am I that much of a freak that you don't even want me in your house?"
Then she froze. Perhaps that last question had come out a little louder than intended... Chi's face turned bright red, and she dipped her head, ignoring the eyes that were now turned towards their table. Oh, no.
"I-I don't want to stay with just anyone. I want to stay with you,"
“Hey, don't—”
"Am I that much of a freak that you don't even want me in your house?"
Yuu's teeth grated and he flinched. She'd nearly yelled that. Glancing around verified that eyes were burning into him, and the medic ducked his head into his left hand, elbow on the table. Pulling at some of the lilac locks that hung in front of his face like a curtain, he spoke.
“Okay you can stay with me. But I think we should leave because that man over there looks like he wants to stab me with his fork.” Raising his hand and head, Yuu looked for the waiter, still rather red-faced. “Waiter! Can we take this to go?”

Chi's eyes widened as she glanced around them, seeing the amount of anger that was being directed at the chuunin. She sniffled and wiped her eyes with her sleeve, trying to staunch the flow of tears - unsuccessfully. She was so ashamed of herself for being rude to her guide, who'd been nothing but kind since her arrival.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry! I-I didn't mean for it t-to come out like that... I'm so sorry, Yuu..." She covered her face with her hands, ears flattened, tail drooping limply behind her. Two hours in and she'd already screwed up massively. What a wonderful start.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry! I-I didn't mean for it t-to come out like that... I'm so sorry, Yuu..."
Yuu was absolutely positive he was going to die. It wasn't quite the girl's fault, and that made it all the worse. The waiter couldn't get to their table fast enough.
“Shhh it's okay, it's okay. I'll take you home. We can eat and talk there.”
It was such a horrible idea. But Yuu quietly packed both of their food in boxes, replacing the cloak around his shoulders and grabbing the bow. Having already showed the person they'd need to pay the coin, Yuu was glad they didn't have to wait in line and pay; he just wanted to get out of there, and the crying girl needed to come with him. With her face still in her hands, Yuu came around the side of the table, putting an arm around her shoulder to attempt to give a slight amount of comfort but to also get her up and guide her in the direction of the exit. Snagging the bag with the food inside, Yuu escorted the girl out, muttering a thank you to the host. This day is just getting better, isn't it? He tried not to let too much irritation show as he led her in the direction of the Kamizuru district.
