After the Fourth Great Shinobi World War ended, the world was experiencing a time of peace. The villages for once were able to live in relative harmony with one another as they rebuilt, and for once, all seemed to be well. The kage were able to live peaceful lives and soon began retiring, passing on the baton to the next generations. That is until an unknown virus infects the northern coast. The first to fall is the once powerful Raikage, Ay. While many thought this virus was a simple mutation of what may have well been the flu, no one would ever think of the destruction it would cause. Especially when it infected a certain Uzumaki Naruto.
With his death came the malice; with the malice came the destruction; with the destruction came the shinobi' revolt; and with the revolt came the sacrifices. The Bijuu became filled with malice that they sought to destroy the world. Shinobi sought a way to fight them and once again capture each of the Bijuu. Time passed, and a plan was devised. The Jinchuuriki would be sacrificed for the greater good of the world, and with the deaths of nine individuals, an uneasy peace began.
As time continued, the villages began to truly restructure. In a peace that would last 80 years after the downfall of the Bijuu, the world would see the creation of a great many things. Technology was beginning to take root and before long the blossoms that grew from the tree of the advanced mind would bear fruit. A many great things came to be. A railroad between the vast many nations. Mechanical limbs to replace lost ones. Radios that could reach between villages. Everything seemed to be becoming less reliant on the shinobi. Only the need for them never truly vanished. As with the growth of time, also continued the growth of malice.

She let Yuu lead her out of the restaurant without resistance, tears still streaming down her face. She sobbed quietly, pressing as close to the chuunin as was physically possible without being inside of him. Chi could hardly believe that she had managed to mess up so quickly. The girl wished she had a cloak like Yuu's with a hood so she could hide her face.
He must be so mad at her for causing a scene like that, ruining a perfectly good dinner, and drawing the eyes of every patron in the place. There was no way he would let her stay with him now. Yuu would make her stay with a different relative, or dump her off at an inn, or tell her to leave before she messed something else up.
The girl was miserable, sure that she had already screwed everything up beyond repair. "I-I'm sorry, I'm sorry," she sobbed again, hiccuping. Her tail dragged along the ground, getting covered in dust, but she couldn't bring herself to care at the moment. She was far too concerned with what Yuu was going to do next.
Although Yuu was very much inclined to push the girl away when she pressed up so close against him, the way she was sobbing prevented him from doing so. It was getting colder out, and the streets were already getting pretty dark. She continued to cry and apologize over and over, and he was receiving stares. With a sigh, he pulled her own a side street off the main stretch, towards a darker area.
“Shhh it's okay,” he repeated from before, patting the girl's head again. “You're not a freak. When we get home you can have a bath and I'll make something warm to drink. Then let's eat and we can talk. Okay?”
Yuu knew that animals liked their ears scratched. Chiyoko wasn't an animal, but... tentatively, he raised his right hand to scratch under her left ear. Just calm down so we can get home.

As soon as they were off the main street, Chi pretty much tackled Yuu, clinging to him as if her life depended on it. Most of the tears on her face ended up on his cloak, leaving a big wet spot. Eventually, she managed to calm herself down, taking deep breaths. Still, she didn't let go of the boy. His presence was a comfort.
"O-okay, Yuu," she mumbled into his chest. To get her unattached, he would literally have to pry her off of him, a task which he would find was less than pleasant when she inevitably ended up scratching the hell out of him or something.
And then he scratched her ear and all her troubles melted away. Chi purred happily - a sound that was somewhat disconcerting coming from a human throat. It felt natural to the girl, however, and the sound rumbled strong and loud even after he stopped scratching.
Yuu's hand recoiled when the alien sound of purring came from the girl's throat. Good god. And if anything, she only clung tighter, and he was able to feel the vibrations of her purr against his chest. This was making him extremely uncomfortable; thank god he'd left in a hurry and had over-tightened the vest. But her staying with him might make secret-keeping problematic. Well, if she wasn't too nosy, it probably would be okay. Hopefully.
“Chikoyo, you can let go now.” No response. “Heeey. I can't take you home if you don't let go.” Still nothing. In mild irritation he flicked the ear he'd been scratching. “Hey. Let's go.”

Chi nuzzled his chest, completely content to stand there and cling to him all night. Yuu was probably less fond of that idea. The thought that her purring might seem odd to him didn't really cross her mind. Nothing much was, at the moment, to be honest. She just wanted to cuddle up to him and relax, regardless of how he felt about it.
His words went completely unheard... until he decided to flick her ear. The rumbling purr cut off almost instantly, and she narrowed her eyes at him. She didn't like being flicked. However, it was effective enough - the girl detached herself from Yuu. Well, she did grab his hand and squeeze it, letting him know that no, she was not going to let go. "Sorry, ehe..."
That, at least, got her to stop, and finally there was some breathable space between them. There was a breath of relief—until she grabbed his hand like a vicegrip, that was. Already starting to get a little overwhelmed by the clingy girl, Yuu yanked his hand from her, only to succeed in pulling her too. This time, the annoyed look pointed upward, towards the black silhouette of the Kage tower in the darkening sky. A longer, but quieter sigh, and Yuu adjusted his grip on the bow and the bag, allowing her to continue holding his hand. If it kept her from crying and clinging, then so be it.
“Come on, now. It's a ways farther and it'll be really dark by the time we get there.”
Yuu tugged the girl along, across two more bridges. The one thing Yuu didn't especially care for in this village was the bridges that spanned between the spires. Solid earth beneath his feet was always more comforting. After a few minutes at a steady pace, they reached the Kamizuru district of the village. Yuu's home, along with the other civilian Kamizuru, was at the back of the “hive” so to speak. The civilian homes were smaller, cheaper, and less durable than the more battle-ready brethren, so to speak. But, Yuu lived mostly alone and had no intention of breaking his walls trying to walk on them. A cheap one bed one bath was plenty.
Pulling his key, Yuu pushed the door open, guiding the girl inside first before flicking on the light. His towel laid still across the back of the couch from his hasty exit.
“You can put your things by the door for now. Do you want a bath or a drink or anything? Or finish the food from the restaurant or something.”
Yuu was beginning to feel awkward. It had been many years since he hosted guests who didn't just barge in and rummage his cabinets without permission. He wasn't quite sure what he was supposed to offer her. He'd need to dig out a spare pillow and blanket as well to lay on the couch. Did he even have a spare blanket? Maybe somewhere... the last time Okami had stayed over they had ended up passing out on the floor at some odd hour of the morning rather than attempting to go to bed like normal people.

The darkness didn't really bother Chi. She could see almost as well as she did during the day - one of the nicer effects of her hybrid state. The girl was aware that normal people, like Yuu, didn't have that ability. And that kind of sucked. Being able to see well in the dark would be a perfect skill for a lot of shinobi to have.
She remained silent during the rest of the trip to Yuu's home, gazing about the Kamizuru compound with awe. What would it be like, living among such a large group of family? She was hit by a wave of jealousy. Yuu had had this for his entire life. So had the rest of the clan. But she had grown up alone and unwanted. The world was so unfair, wasn't it?
Chi dropped her bags by the door. Her stomach complained loudly that she'd never gotten around to actually eating anything, and she giggled. "I'd like to finish my meal. And do you have any tea? Black tea, preferably," she replied. "An' then a bath would be nice, yeah."
"I'd like to finish my meal. And do you have any tea? Black tea, preferably. An' then a bath would be nice, yeah."
Yuu hummed. Did he have black tea? He wasn't quite sure. He thought she'd want milk or something.
“Come sit down after you take off your shoes,” he said, propping his bow up so he could balance and remove his own. Afterward he went around the sofa to place the bag of food on the table, unclipping the cloak and hanging it on the nearby hook. “I think I've only got green tea. Will that work?”
He was making it either way, so it was either that or juice. Once the brew was good, he returned to the table with cups and forks. Eating out of the boxes was fine; it was getting late and Yuu didn't want to wash dishes. Still, after sitting down across the table and handing a fork to the girl, he stared absently at her, more specifically, her ears, now that they were in good light. Her hair—fur?—had a pink tint to it; it had looked white in the evening. The teriyaki restaurant had been rather dark as well. Things were going to get awkward quickly. Yuu wasn't sure if he'd be able to sleep comfortably with a perfect stranger sleeping under his roof. He needed to return the coin to Chinatsu-sensei as well.
“What were you hoping to find here? Most girls your age wouldn't travel so far alone just to learn how to use bees.”

Chi slipped off her sandals and sat down at the table with her food. "Yeah, green tea is fine," she replied, stretching and scratching a small itch behind her ear. The girl watched him as he moved about the kitchen, brewing the tea, pouring it, getting forks. She was so unused to being around others - in a home setting, that is - that she could hardly take her eyes off of him.
She thanked him upon receiving her tea and fork, and began picking through the takeout box. Chi mostly just wanted the meat out of it, to be honest. And she had to be careful about the onions that peppered the dish - she'd learned that lesson the hard way when she'd ended up in the hospital because, apparently, onions were poisonous to cats (and cat-human hybrids). Not that she really missed eating onions. They were kind of icky.
Chi blinked at Yuu. "Offer an orphan a family and they'll jump at the chance, Yuu," she stated softly, sipping her tea. "That's what I want. Family. The bees are a bonus, I guess. Mostly I just want to know what it feels like to belong somewhere. To have a family that cares for me. To know... That I'm not as alone as I feel."
"Offer an orphan a family and they'll jump at the chance, Yuu,"
Yuu blinked at her, picking at his still-warm chicken and noodles in the box.
"That's what I want. Family. The bees are a bonus, I guess. Mostly I just want to know what it feels like to belong somewhere. To have a family that cares for me. To know... That I'm not as alone as I feel."
About halfway through her words Yuu's fork had stilled, and his heart went out to her. Poor girl. Was that why she cried when he wouldn't let her stay? The medic supposed he could understand that. But she also possessed a set of differences that would naturally enhance that misfit feeling. But those differences Yuu found interesting and appealing, not something to be cruel to her over or deserved her the title of “freak.” He would be lying if he said he didn't want to examine her a bit more thoroughly. Could she she in the dark? Did her eyes shine? Could she smell with her tongue? Wait no, that was snakes... cats had rough tongues. When they did that open-mouthed breathing thing; Did Chiyoko also do that? What about catnip? Dozens of other questions popped into Yuu's head as he observed her. The purring had been disconcerting at first but that was because he hadn't expected it. If he scratched her ear again, would she purr again? But, there was a saying about cats and curiosity, and Yuu was more inclined to leave well enough alone.
But otherwise, Yuu didn't know what to do with her. She said she wanted to stay here a few weeks. How long was a few weeks? He surely couldn't keep her here. And next week was his... time. Ugh. What if she could smell really well, even without the mouth-nose-wrinkle-breath-y thing that cats do? It smelled unpleasant to the average human nose... so even if she wasn't being nosy... it was starting to make Yuu feel sick to his stomach, and he kind of found himself losing his appetite. His chest was beginning to feel tighter than normal, too. Now he just wanted to go to bed. So much for a relaxing night. So, he offered his food to her.
“Would you like some chicken, too? I had a big meal this evening, so I'm not as hungry as I thought I was.” He tapped his fork, aware that he did not respond to her statements. “I'm sorry if I seemed rude before, I just... don't normally have guests. You can stay here for now.”
He didn't really want to up and say she was welcome to stay as long as she was in Iwa; it wasn't that he minded guests necessarily. It was just... he was uncomfortable with strangers in his house for an extended period. The binder on his chest could only stay on about half a day each day without being damaging. Sleeping in it would be dangerous; it could cause asphyxia. So he'd just have to lock his door while Chiyoko was here. There would be a lot of things he'd need to do. If she wasn't so clingy, he may be able to get away with wearing loser bindings and sweatshirts when at home. There was just so much to think about, and that's only concerning the top half... she'd find out. She'd completely and utterly find out. The thought of it was starting to make Yuu feel anxious. Sending her away would cause her to cry again; he'd already brought her home. Let her stay tonight. Coax her into staying someplace else. The medic considered possibly with his brother; but Kyo still lived in their parents' household, and Yuu held mixed feelings towards his parents. They weren't horrible people, but they were... judgemental.
“If you're done eating, why don't you head towards the bath. There's soap and towels in there,” Yuu said, pointing with his fork to the direction of the bathroom. “If you don't have anything to sleep in, let me know. I don't have pants with tail-holes, but I'll see what I can do. I'll have the couch ready for you to sleep on when you're done. You should sleep when you get out; we need to visit the Tsuchikage in the morning.”
Yuu needed to return the coin, and plus there were some formalities that needed addressed for her stay. He'd stick around long enough for her to finish with her bath and come out; as it would be rude to leave her alone in a stranger's home, and that would do nothing for his discomfort.

She noted that he didn't have much to say about her explanation. That was alright. Most people didn't know what to say. What really mattered was that he bothered to listen in the first place.
Her ears perked up when he offered her his chicken. "Yes, please!" By this point, she'd picked all the meat out of her meal, sampled a few noodles and some vegetables that didn't look icky, and declared the rest of the box to not be worth her time. So Yuu's chicken was more than welcome, and she devoured it swiftly, licking her lips when she was finished.
"Alright." She slipped out of her seat and headed over to her bags. Kneeling down, she dug through the smaller one until she'd produced what she was looking for - her nightclothes and various soaps and shampoos (you couldn't wash cat fur with just anything and expect it to stay nice and soft), hairbrush, things like that. Arms full, she headed off in the direction of the bathroom.
Chi fiddled around until the water was the desired temperature, stripped, and hopped in, sighing with pleasure. A nice hot bath was just what she needed to relax, and she absolutely planned on taking her time and washing herself thoroughly. She really needed to get all the dirt out of her tail fur...
A long while later, Chi emerged from the bathroom wearing a tank top and panties only - it didn't occur to her that perhaps, in a boy's house, she should wear more than that - hair, ears, and tail mostly dry, clutching a brush in her hand. "Yuu? Can you help me brush my tail? There's some spots I can't reach very well."

When she gathered her belongings and trotted off to the bath, Yuu stared down at the table with a shaky breath, odd eyes tracing the grains in the wood. It would be okay. Just like when he was on missions. Just... in his own home. He could deal with it. He could deal with this. It was no big deal. Another breath, and the Kamizuru stood, collecting the trash and forks. He frowned at the noodles and other things Chiyoko left behind, picking at and nibbling at some of the remains before tossing it all into the trash and cleaning the forks. He wasn't sure how long she'd take, so he wouldn't spend time worrying about it. Not right now. He could deal with it. I can deal with this.
Yuu went to his bedroom, rummaging the closet, not quite sure if he had a second blanket. But, folded on the top shelf, he found a throw covered in puppies. He stared at it for a good, long moment, trying to identify where it had originated. Right, a gift from the mutt when he turned 14. Had it been up there that long? Holding it up to his face, Yuu smelled it. A bit dusty, but it was clean. Holding it up, he shook it out. It would be alright. Hopefully. If she didn't like it, he could give her his blanket. Snagging the second pillow off of his bed, Yuu went back to the living area and made up the couch like a bed. It wasn't fantastic, but it was what it was.
Taking a look at the closed bathroom door, Yuu idly wondered how much longer she would take. Perhaps he could get changed. Slinging to his bedroom, Yuu dug out some pajamas, suddenly realizing he couldn't wear his normal apparel with a girl in the house. Digging further into the drawers, he located sleep pants only used on colder nights, pulling them on. Rummaging through another drawer, he located an old binder. It was looser and would breathe easier until she went to sleep and he could retire for the night.
Pulling the shirt over his head, he unfastened the buckles of the undervest, a rather useful piece of light armor that wasn't necessarily designed for binding. Sweet, beautiful breaths of air. He knew that because of his breast size, he had it a lot better than other trans he'd met. But air wasn't a thing he'd get to enjoy until later, and he slipped the looser binder over his head. Next came a loose tshirt that didn't form-fit, and the pants. Then it was just a matter of waiting for the girl to finish. Coming back to the main room, Yuu sat on the opposite end of the couch from the pillow, leaning on his arm against the back. By the time Chiyoko emerged from the bathroom, he'd already been dozing.
"Yuu?" Yuu opened his eyes, staring blankly at the girl holding a brush and looking at him. What was she wearing...? "Can you help me brush my tail? There's some spots I can't reach very well."
Yuu blinked again, waking up better, and a dash of pink dusted his cheeks as he looked away.
“Go put on some pants first, Chiyoko. You shouldn't wander around a strange guy's house in your underwear.”

By the time she emerged from the bathroom, Yuu had retrieved a pillow and blanket for her, and had changed into what she assumed were his pajamas. He sure wore a lot of clothes to bed. Chi had a tendency to roll around a lot, and found shorts that got tangled up to be rather irritating, so she wore as little as possible without going to bed in the nude - something she no longer did only because sometimes her teammates decided to come over, and she wasn't supposed to be nude around them.
She gave Yuu a blank look when he asked her to put on some pants. What was wrong with her underwear? It's not like anything was showing that wasn't supposed to show. She was perfectly decent. But instead of whining at him, she went over to her bag, found a pair of comfy shorts, and slipped them on, carefully maneuvering her tail through the hole she'd made in the back of them. "Got pants on now, Yuu," she informed him, being that he wasn't looking in her direction.
Chi perched on the couch next to Yuu, her back facing him and her tail resting on his lap, flicking idly. She put the brush - which was made specially for cat fur, she had picked it up at a pet store - on his lap and waited. "You gotta be kind of gentle, 'cause it really hurts if you press down too hard with the brush or try to pull it through a knot. But I can't go without brushing it, 'cause then it won't be soft." She liked her fur to be nice and clean and soft, even if that meant she spent an inordinate amount of time grooming her tail.
At that moment, she thwacked his chest with said appendage. "Oops. Sorry about that. Sometimes it kinda has a mind of its own," she joked, grinning.

"Got pants on now, Yuu,"
Yuu looked over to her, and his eyes trailed down her short legs. Those were most definitely not pants, but they were better than nothing, and he averted his gaze. Not that she stayed out of his vision for long, though, for the Kamizuru kitty-girl took a seat next to him, placing her long, damp, pink-furred tail right across his lap. He hadn't even agreed to brush it! Yet, anyway. Decline the chance to inspect this appendage? Not a chance.
"You gotta be kind of gentle, 'cause it really hurts if you press down too hard with the brush or try to pull it through a knot. But I can't go without brushing it, 'cause then it won't be soft."
“Oka—”
And his words were cut off with a heavy thwack to his chest.
"Oops. Sorry about that. Sometimes it kinda has a mind of its own."
“I will... keep that in mind,” Yuu replied awkwardly, looking at her twitchy tail. He picked it up in his left hand, thumb running across the bony strip of flesh under the fur. It was soft; very soft. He wanted to rub the fur against his cheek, but better judgment prevented that; it would come off as so perversely weird. So instead, he gently pulled the wire brush through the fur, rather fascinated with it. It was still damp, and had a damp fur sort of smell to it, but she seemed to have gotten the water out for the most part. It would dry soon enough.
“It's very soft,” Yuu commented, stroking from the base to to the tip, careful to be gentle around snags as requested. As he went down the length of her tail, Yuu gently pinched along the flesh, mentally counting the amount of bones. From the base of her pants to the tip, he counted twenty-two. Interesting. He'd have to cross-reference that with a cat skeleton at a later date. Satisfied, Yuu lifted her tail to brush underneath, but froze when he realized just where his hands were at the base of her tail and promptly released both the tail and the brush.

As he gently brushed her tail, Chi began to purr again. It was so nice to have somebody else to do this for her for once. She didn't have to worry about awkwardly bending the appendage to try and get at the difficult spots herself, and it was really relaxing when she wasn't trying to tug knots out of her own fur.
She glanced back at him when he said he was done, pouting. "You didn't get the underside. That's the hardest part for me to do by myself," the girl pointed out, flicking his nose with her tail as a sort of reprimand for stopping. "Please finish it, Yuu?" Of course, Chi couldn't make him do it if he was really insistent about it, but she was definitely going to try.
If he didn't want to do it, she'd just have to drag the brush through the soft fur before she went to sleep. Because as soon as he was done with her tail, Chi fully intended to climb into his lap and cuddle with him, regardless of how appropriate he thought that was.
