After the Fourth Great Shinobi World War ended, the world was experiencing a time of peace. The villages for once were able to live in relative harmony with one another as they rebuilt, and for once, all seemed to be well. The kage were able to live peaceful lives and soon began retiring, passing on the baton to the next generations. That is until an unknown virus infects the northern coast. The first to fall is the once powerful Raikage, Ay. While many thought this virus was a simple mutation of what may have well been the flu, no one would ever think of the destruction it would cause. Especially when it infected a certain Uzumaki Naruto.
With his death came the malice; with the malice came the destruction; with the destruction came the shinobi' revolt; and with the revolt came the sacrifices. The Bijuu became filled with malice that they sought to destroy the world. Shinobi sought a way to fight them and once again capture each of the Bijuu. Time passed, and a plan was devised. The Jinchuuriki would be sacrificed for the greater good of the world, and with the deaths of nine individuals, an uneasy peace began.
As time continued, the villages began to truly restructure. In a peace that would last 80 years after the downfall of the Bijuu, the world would see the creation of a great many things. Technology was beginning to take root and before long the blossoms that grew from the tree of the advanced mind would bear fruit. A many great things came to be. A railroad between the vast many nations. Mechanical limbs to replace lost ones. Radios that could reach between villages. Everything seemed to be becoming less reliant on the shinobi. Only the need for them never truly vanished. As with the growth of time, also continued the growth of malice.

do you know what a time being is?
A single paper shuriken struck a handmade target board nailed to a training log, its location was in a small red ring that was right before a black dot that marked the center of the board. Surrounding it were other paper shurikens that were scattered about on the board. None of them even came close to touching the center. On the opposite side of the board and a few good feet away was a young Hikari who made another paper shuriken from a slip of paper that peeled off from his skin.
Reeling his hand back he threw the shuriken at the board only for it to miss completely. The look on the boy's face was utterly depressing. He had completely missed! And he was so close the last time too! "Oooooh, and I was so close last time. Maybe its the wind?" He mumbled to himself as he raised a hand to feel for any strong breezes around him.
you are adorable and i want to squeeze you and love you but i'm terrified of your aunt so i won't.
Kazuko sat cross-legged in a mostly-empty section of the training grounds, carefully tracing symbols onto a strip of paper. She had been working on a new seal for explosive tags that would let her change the radius of the explosion and maybe alter it. Unfortunately, most of her efforts wouldn't even explode, let alone do any of the cool things she wanted them to do. Infusing chakra into the paper, she attached it to a kunai and flung it out into the dunes, making a hand seal as she released it. It fizzled and turned to ash. Well... it had done something, at least.
Having lost interest in the project for the moment, she put away her brush and ink and picked up a strip of paper, idly folding it into the shape of a shuriken. Her shift at the gate didn't start for another five hours; plenty of time to go home and take a nap, but was it worth it to go all that distance? By the time she reached her small, secluded apartment, she would only have about four hours; by the time she fell asleep, three and a half at the very best... Nah, she would just chill out here and people watch. If she happened to doze off, well, she would doze, but that wasn't a big deal.
For the moment, though, she was folding paper shuriken and watching a little blue-haired boy get frustrated by target practice. As a chuunin, she should really go and offer to help him...
Sighing, she pocketed her paper shuriken and moseyed on over. "Hey there, kid. Couldn't help but notice you're having a little trouble. I can help, if you'd like." Kazuko pulled one of her own paper shuriken out and flicked it at the target; being regular old paper, it bumped against the center of the target and fell to the ground. But it was demonstrative enough of her ability to hit a bull's eye.

Maybe if he altered the shape of the kunai? Or perhaps waited till the winds were in his favor? No that wouldn't work, enemies didn't wait to be killed after all. Guess it really was his fault that his accuracy was total poo poo. As he tried to figure out if changing the shape of the shuriken would do anything his self esteem began to wane. Soon he just let out another sigh and let the paper shuriken he was making crumple and fall to the ground. As he stared at it he turned to a voice talking to him, a red headed girl offering to give him some advice, well who was he to turn down advice froma senior? "Oh yes please! I really wanna get this right or the other Genin will mock me." He pleased hoping she would help him in his dilemma.
kazuko is a fountain of wisdom. and laziness. mostly laziness. but at least she can hit a target right.
Kazuko jovially ruffled his hair, giving the young boy a toothy grin. "Ah, it's not a problem. It's my pleasure to help," she replied. "And if the genin you hang around are going to mock you for not being perfect? Ditch 'em and chill with somebody that values you for who you are, not just what you can do."
She leaned down, as if to tell him a big secret. "Back when I was a fresh young genin like yourself, I couldn't hit a bull's eye to save my life," Kazuko revealed, chuckling. "I graduated at almost the bottom of my class. But I'm a chuunin, and some of them are still genin. Funny how life works, isn't it?"
The chuunin picked up one of his paper shuriken and studied it. "Part of the Origami Clan, I assume?" Everyone in Suna knew of the Origami Clan because their current Kage was a member. And they were the only people that could use paper for weapons, so it was a logical assumption to make.

Wow, she sounded pretty wise, then again judging from how old she looked. She had a point too, if they were just going to make fun of him for something trivial should he really care about them? Listening to the rest of her words Hikari felt a little more reassured, so she wasn't the best genin either? Yet she still made it to Chuunin...guess she did what Hikari was doing and just put in a lot of hard work, now he didn't feel as crummy as he did earlier.
"Yes I'm from the Origami clan," The little boy answered to her question about his lineage, "My name is Hikari, Origami Hikari. Um, can I ask your name miss?" She looked old enough to be one of the many local Chuunin but Hikari wasn't really familiar with every shinobi in the village.
"Anzai Kazuko, gate guard and paper pusher extraordinaire. It's nice to meet you, Hikari," she introduced herself with a grin on her face. Most genin were totally unimpressed with her career choices because she didn't run dangerous missions or do anything flashy. What most of them didn't realize was that, without the people like her that helped to keep the village running smoothly, they wouldn't even be able to get clients to pay them to do missions. She could go on about that at length if she had to, but that really was a whole lot of effort, so she usually didn't. "Made chuunin, oh... two or three exams ago, I believe. I'm not very good at keeping track of that stuff, ehe."
Kazuko still wasn't quite sure how she passed the exams, but hey, she wasn't going to complain. It just so happened that her skill set and level of motivation was suited to a laid-back office job rather than the task force or teaching at the academy or being the Kazekage's personal assistant or anything else that chuunin typically did. She didn't have much ambition, and would rather serve her village in way that probably wouldn't end up getting her maimed or killed.

So she was one of the gate guards? No wonder he didn't really have much of a memory of her aside from possible passing her when her shift was over. Hikari was never really one who walked in and out of the front gate, no real reason for him to do so anyway aside from heading out to do missions but even then he paid little attention to the people guarding them. Boy did he feel rude and insensitive right about now.
"I see, that's pretty impressive, you must be pretty strong Miss Kazuko-san. So um, sorry if I'm being rude but, what do you think I should do to improve my um, accuracy?" He was sheepish about asking since she revealed that she was someone who had a pretty important job in the village yet he gave no thanks or mind at all during the times he's been past the gate.
She was a little amused that he thought she had to be strong to get people to sign in and out and show their papers before passing through the gates. Hardly anybody was ever dumb enough to question the gate guard; most of them knew, logically, that the procedures existed for a reason, and thus complied without argument. "Nah. I'm pretty average, to be honest." Hey, it was the truth. Other than her sensory abilities, she wasn't anything extraordinary. No rare jutsu, or special skills, or any stuff like that. And that was fine by her.
"The most important thing you want to remember with throwing weapons like kunai and shuriken is consistency." She demonstrated, making sure the boy was watching as she got into a proper stance, drew the pointed star back, and released it. It thudded into the target. Kazuko did it twice more, and then threw it differently. This shuriken barely hit the outside ring of the target. "Consistency. Use the same stance, the same movements, the same throw, every time. It might seem a little boring, but that's how you're going to get good at hitting the target. And to improve your accuracy, it's really just a matter of lining up the center of the target with your line of sight. It sounds obvious, but your eyes are the most important body part when it comes to aiming. When I lost this," she informed him, tapping the eye patch she wore, "I had to completely relearn how to throw weapons. Anyway, the most important thing is practice. Eventually, the movements will be so ingrained in you that throwing a shuriken and hitting your target will come as naturally as breathing. Don't be discouraged if you don't get it right away, because most people don't. Just keep on trying."

Talk about words of wisdom. Her speech made some sense to the boy. Keep a steady pose, make sure you focus on the spot, and try to continue doing the same motion over an d over until it becomes second nature. That sounded reasonable, although it did seem like it would only work on a stationary target, it was worth a shot. Forming another set of four paper shuriken this time Hikari gripped them in his hands instead of letting them glide around him. Taking one he threw it at the target, hitting it somewhere in the middle, a good start and spot to practice. Taking the rest the threw each one a single one at a time, aiming at where his first landed repeating the exact motions.
"Hey...I think I did it!" Sure enough all four of them were clumped close to each other instead of being spread out. "I can't believe that worked, thanks Kazuko-san! He thanked her and gave her a small hug as another thanks.
Kazuko broke out into a wide grin as the boy listened to her advice, and managed to at least improve his precision by a fair margin, landing all four in a little clump. Hey, the kid had actually taken in what she had said and applied it that quickly, which was quite impressive, to be honest. Most genin didn't have that much sense, because they were too busy being hormonal teenagers.
The redhead was a little surprised when the little boy hugged her, but she shrugged and returned his affection. "Keep on doing it like that, and you'll be able to hit anything you want to hit, Hikari," she told him, grinning.

With a smile he broke away from the hug and decided to toss another set of shuriken to the target board. It wasn't much of an improvement but he was certain that the shuriken were in a slightly closer clump than before. It was still a lot better than his first few attempts either way. "Thanks for all your help Kazuko-sama, um if there's anything I can do to thank you then just say so! I should at least do something for you to show how much I appreciate your advice and help with my training."
The one-eyed girl blushed a little when the boy added the suffix -sama to her name. She wasn't good enough, honestly, to deserve that kind of respect out of anybody, even a genin. Well, to him, she probably seemed like a really strong shinobi - and one that had deigned to teach him. So, she guessed she could kind of see why he'd done it.
"Nah, you don't owe me anything, Hikari," she responded, ruffling his hair. "Just keep on training - seeing a young shinobi grow, that's thanks enough for me."

"I will train harder, I promise you that." The young shinobi declared proudly before a thought popped into his head. Well more of a question than a thought. "Um Miss Kazuko-san, if you don't mind me asking, what are your skills? I mean, what did you focus on when you were a Genin or Student if you don't mind me asking? You must know a lot of different jutsu if your a Chuunin."
"I study fuuinjutsu, the art of seals. There are so many things you can do with seals - suppress someone's chakra, make them go numb, prevent them from lying... Almost anything you can think of, really. I don't know too many fuuinjutsu because they're pretty difficult to get a hang of, but I make a decent support shinobi in the field," Kazuko explained, pulling out a piece of paper, her bottle of ink, and her brush. "These are the tools of my trade. You take the ink and brush and paint the seal designs onto paper, then infuse them with chakra and use them on people. You can also put seals directly on people, but that's nigh-impossible in a battle situation."
She tucked her supplies away and grinned at Hikari. "And I can spar with my eyes closed and still win." That was the only explanation he was getting on that one, unless he wanted a demonstration.

Despite it sounding somewhat boring to your average go getter genin Hikari couldn't help but get lost in his imagination, picturing all sorts of different things Kazuko could do with Fuuninjutsu, leaving her enemies helpless while she delivered the finishing blow. Plus that bit about her fighting blind sounded completely amazing. "Wow...that sounds really amazing. I know a bit of fuunijutsu, well really just a small one but, I do want to learn a bit more, I'm not good at taijutsu and I don't want to just focus on ninjutsu all the time. Do you know any kind of beginner level fuunijutsu I could probably do Kazuko-san? Gray blue eyes sparkled with determination as he asked, he did want to study more ways to be an effective shinobi other than relying on his family's secret jutsu, after all paper was only so strong.
