After the Fourth Great Shinobi World War ended, the world was experiencing a time of peace. The villages for once were able to live in relative harmony with one another as they rebuilt, and for once, all seemed to be well. The kage were able to live peaceful lives and soon began retiring, passing on the baton to the next generations. That is until an unknown virus infects the northern coast. The first to fall is the once powerful Raikage, Ay. While many thought this virus was a simple mutation of what may have well been the flu, no one would ever think of the destruction it would cause. Especially when it infected a certain Uzumaki Naruto.
With his death came the malice; with the malice came the destruction; with the destruction came the shinobi' revolt; and with the revolt came the sacrifices. The Bijuu became filled with malice that they sought to destroy the world. Shinobi sought a way to fight them and once again capture each of the Bijuu. Time passed, and a plan was devised. The Jinchuuriki would be sacrificed for the greater good of the world, and with the deaths of nine individuals, an uneasy peace began.
As time continued, the villages began to truly restructure. In a peace that would last 80 years after the downfall of the Bijuu, the world would see the creation of a great many things. Technology was beginning to take root and before long the blossoms that grew from the tree of the advanced mind would bear fruit. A many great things came to be. A railroad between the vast many nations. Mechanical limbs to replace lost ones. Radios that could reach between villages. Everything seemed to be becoming less reliant on the shinobi. Only the need for them never truly vanished. As with the growth of time, also continued the growth of malice.

Leaving Yuu in Iwa was one of the hardest things she had ever done. In the few weeks she had stayed with him, she had grown closer to him than any other person she had ever known, even Ringo, the person she considered her best friend. From day one, she had been irresistibly drawn to the lilac-haired man; perhaps because he didn't act like her unusual appearance was some kind of annoyance or curse. He treated her like she was a person, not an animal. Well... except for the bag of feathers, and a couple other things. But that was alright; she was kind of a cat, and feathers and stuff were fun. All the same, that didn't make her any less human, and he understood that.
Yuu made her feel things she'd never felt before. Together, they had embarked into strange new territory. And she didn't want to go back, or trade it for anything in the world. To Yuu, she mattered; that was a completely new concept to the girl. Perhaps it was more important to her than even village loyalty. Thinking that way terrified her; she didn't want to betray the village that had raised her and kept her safe. But at the same time, Kusa would never be home again now that she'd found Yuu.
Chi was traveling at a slow, meandering pace, lost in her thoughts. The rail lines didn't go directly to the villages, so she had a way's travel to go before she could catch a train and ride it back to Kusa no Kuni. She wasn't in any hurry; the slower she went, the better. She almost didn't want to return home at all and have to face Ringo and tell her that she wished she never had to come back.
Her tail flicked listlessly, drooping as her thoughts turned sour. She kept her ears pricked, alert for any signs of other people. Running into someone unfriendly wouldn't be any fun at all...
Xero walked along one of the many winding roads scattered throughout Tsuchi no Kuni with Seiya in tow. He had been teaching her the basics of how to survive as a rogue. He would like his allies to be at least somewhat competent. Today's lesson was taking advantage of passers-by.
He could see a lot further thanks to the whether not being rainy, and spotted their next target on the horizon. He pointed the figure out and gave instructions. "There's the next one. Follow my lead and wait for the signal. And don't try anything stupid, you remember what happened to that couple you tried to help, right? Maybe if you do it right, I won't have to kill this one."
The man set a deliberate pace for the pair as they approached the unknown person. As they got closer he could make out some distinctive features of the person. The long hair and style of dress indicated that they were likely female. There was a glint coming from her neck, but she was too far away for him to tell what was causing it. And... were those cat ears...? And a tail...? Strange, but it was of no consequence. He planned on chatting a bit. One could never go wrong with complements.

"There's the next one. Follow my lead and wait for the signal. And don't try anything stupid, you remember what happened to that couple you tried to help, right? Maybe if you do it right, I won't have to kill this one."
Seyia clutched the folded parasol to her chest, pointed end down. It still made her heart ache, the look on that woman's face... and it had been all her own fault. She followed behind the large male a few paces back, head somewhat ducked but still capable of seeing the road in front of her. Her senses told her the approaching figure was a shinobi, judging by the active chakra system that was larger than that of a civilian's. Sano-sensei hated shinobi. The last couple had been killed because Seiya had used the false surroundings technique to make their headbands appear to be simple accessories to avoid trouble, but had only made it worse.
As they grew closer, Seiya's head rose, green eyes taking in the approaching figure more fully. At first she'd thought the girl wore a strange hat upon her head, but when a swaying appendage curled up from behind the female, Seiya realized that they were ears. Animal ears and a tail. Her genuine interest was piquied, and she shuffled closer to the cloaked man, not wanting to stand out too much for staring and getting scolded. She just needed to wait for the signal. The girl looked young, and because Seiya was also young, that would make the child easy to manipulate. Hopefully they could take whatever Sano wanted from her and leave without confrontation.

Up ahead, the young catgirl sighted fellow travelers heading in the opposite direction. Her ears perked up slightly; she was by nature a people person, and loved meeting new people. Although her desire to talk to strangers had been slightly dampened by her encounter with the blue-haired Kashii shortly into her stay in the village, one of the two people heading in her direction was a young woman. Thus, by slightly flawed logic, Chi figured that the man with her couldn't be all that bad.
As she approached the pair, she waved her tail in greeting.
The pair approached with a steady pace. Soon the glare around her neck faded, allowing him to see that it was a village headband. Another village dog, what luck. This changed things, though not much. When the three were close enough to start a conversation he called out to the lone girl with a charming tone. "Excuse me miss."
"We couldn't help but notice your lovely ears. My young friend has taken an interest. Would you mind if she scratched them a little? She's shy and doesn't speak much, but I can tell she really wants to." Xero said, nudging his companion forward. He would gain the shinobi's trust, bleed her for information, and then dispose of her. In failing this, he would skip the first two steps.

Seiya hid partially behind Sano's cloak as the girl approached, eyes locked on the twitching tail. Seiya wasn't usually shy, but she really didn't want to mess anything up and have more people die.
"Excuse me miss. We couldn't help but notice your lovely ears. My young friend has taken an interest. Would you mind if she scratched them a little? She's shy and doesn't speak much, but I can tell she really wants to."
Seiya gave a little silent 'eep' when she was pushed forward. The man was right, she did want to scratch the ears, so she gave a friendly wave to the girl, trotting over to inspect her closer. The headband confirmed the girl was a shinobi, so she didn't grab at the furred appendages like she would normally. From close, Seiya could see that, although the girl was shorter in stature than herself, she was about the same age and had a more solid body type.
Realizing she was supposed to be “shy,” Seiya blushed slightly realizing she'd already messed up, and ducked her head in apology for getting so close to the girl without permission.

When the masked man spoke to her, Chi unconsciously took a step back. His voice didn't hold a threatening tone; on the contrary, he sounded very friendly. But that didn't mean he was. Her one bad experience had made her infinitely more cautious; ears laid flat against her head, she avoided looking up into his eyes and instead looked at the girl.
From the shape and definition of her face, Chi would guess that this girl was around her age, or maybe a little older because of her height. She had some sort of marking or tattoo on her face, and it seemed that she and Chi shared a favorite color in pink. The catgirl, however, was wearing the lavender dress and bow that reminded her of Yuu's hair, which was threatening to usurp the soft pink as her favorite.
"...Sure," she replied eventually as the girl approached, straightening out her ears. They were soft and well-groomed as always, and she did like having her ears scratched...
The young girl crossed her arms over her chest to hide the fact that she was shaking slightly, and cast a distrustful glance at the masked man. The girl looked friendly enough, but... "What's your name?" she asked, tilting her head slightly to the side.
Judging from the position of her ears and the look in her eye, the girl didn't quite trust them yet. She had, however, started to open up to Seiya. Xero gave his companion a moment to act flustered by the question before answering. "Her name is Sara, and you can call me Xero. It's nice to meet you..." He trailed off, waiting for the girl to finish the statement. The man had chosen an alias similar to her own name for his companion to make her less likely to slip up.
He noticed her headband bore the symbol for Kusagakure. A girl from another country wandering around alone was strange. It made his gears start turning, perhaps if he did this right he could start a conflict between the two villages. "You should be careful walking around by yourself. You never know who you might meet along the way. Some people are dangerous you know." He warned in his friendly tone.

"...Sure."
Seiya rocked on her heels and tentatively reached out to the girl's ear, small fingers brushing the warm, soft fluff that furred it. Forgetting herself for a moment, she grasped the fluffy ear completely, amazed at how soft it was and how she could see the veins through the thin skin. They were just like cat ears.
"What's your name?"
Seiya withdrew her hand slightly when asked that, biting the inside of her lip.
"Her name is Sara, and you can call me Xero. It's nice to meet you..."
Seiya was spared having to answer when Sano-san did it for her, and she looked back to him. What kind of alias was Xero? Sure Sara sounded kind of like her own name, but Xero? Rather than stare too long, she turned her emerald eyes back to the kitty girl, scratching at the big ear.
"You should be careful walking around by yourself. You never know who you might meet along the way. Some people are dangerous you know."
Seiya's eyes had to avert to the ground at the sound of those words, and she immediately went around behind the girl to inspect her tail so that her face couldn't be seen. She wasn't too good at that whole “lying to innocent people” thing and her expression might have given away the fact that she was one of the two dangerous people here the girl would have to be worrying about.

She trilled softly when the girl's small hand brushed against her fur. Chi was used to curious people grabbing at her ears, so when the girl practically started fondling the appendage, she wasn't ruffled in the least.
"Sara. That's a really pretty name. I'm Chiyoko." She smiled at the other girl, although she was quite unnerved by the fact that the masked man had spoken for her. He already made Chi quite uneasy, and this wasn't helping.
His 'friendly' warning caused the girl's tail to poof out to twice its normal size. Nervous blue eyes flicked from him to the path behind him and back, trying to gauge the possibility of getting past him before he could grab her. This Xero guy was giving off some seriously bad vibes, and it was truly freaking the catgirl out.
She craned her head around to look at Sara, who was inspecting the poofy tail. Suddenly she wished she'd never agreed to let the girl pet her. Chi felt vulnerable now, and that was never a good sign. She wrung her hands, making sure to keep them close enough together that she could summon some bees if it was necessary.
"...I'm expected home soon. I-I really should go..."
The nervous tone in the cat-girl's voice indicated that going home wasn't the only reason she needed to leave. Very well then, Xero would need to play his own part. "You seem scared... It's my mask isn't it? I'm sorry, but ANBU members aren't allowed to take their masks off while we're on duty." Hopefully that would pacify the girl's anxiety. He would be posing as a hunter from his former home for now.
"I'm actually looking for... a friend of mine... You wouldn't have happened to seen him would you? He's about a foot taller than you, brown hair, blue eyes. There's a scar on his cheek." The man went into the description of a fictional character. This would give credit to his false identity. Though if this didn't work there was nothing left for him to gain by keeping up the charade.

The girl's tail poofing up so large was fascinating to Seiya, and she poked at the fluff, even understanding that it meant she was kind of scared.
"...I'm expected home soon. I-I really should go..."
Home, yeah. That would be nice. She continued to stroke the tail, offering an encouraging smile when she was looked at, trying to block out the fake story Sano-san was weaving while at the same time making sure the important parts stuck with her so that she could back him up. The description he used was more likely than not fake, since she'd never seen anyone looking like that. She sort of wished they could get it over with already, the older couple was one thing but a girl her own age was striking chords within Seiya that made her uncomfortable.

The mask certainly didn't help, but it was the aura that surrounded the man, the vibes he gave off, that were making her fur stand on end, although the girl wasn't about to tell him that. So she just nodded timidly.
When Sara touched her tail fluff, she jumped, clearly more jittery than she would have liked to let on. "I-I haven't seen anyone that looks like that... You're the first people I've met on this road," Chi told him honestly.
Her tail was twitching nervously, and she murmured an apology as she thwacked the other girl with it. Then, taking a deep breath, she moved to stride past the masked man and be on her way. "If I see your friend on my way home, I'll let him know you're looking for him."
That was the reply he'd been expecting. Of course there was no one fitting that description around. This girl seemed scared out of her mind and was rightly so. Xero had tried to be nice. He had tried to be friendly, but that just wasn't as much fun. He was now losing patience, and wanted to get right to the rough.
"That's too bad..." He answered, stopping the girl from walking past him by placing his hand on her shoulder. He stopped all of her movements with his shadows, forming the hand seal with his free hand. It was time for the fun to begin. "Sara, if you would please." He said, indicating it was time for her to follow through.

Seiya's hands wrung together when Chiyoko moved to walk past the large man, praying that no one would get hurt too badly. She stilled her breath so that it wouldn't shake when Sano followed the girl, freezing her in place with his shadow, the same move that had grabbed her when she tried to run away. They were just taking her things and money, nothing more. Scaring her a little. Nothing more.
"Sara, if you would please."
And that was her cue. She couldn't screw up, she absolutely could not. Just scare the girl. That's all that needed to be done. Moving around to Chiyoko's front, Seiya made eye contact with the frightened girl and performed the handseals before thrusting the child into a world of black. As if merely having stepped into a dark room, the girl's eyes would adjust not to see Seiya and Sano standing on a road but instead herself confined to the ledge of a dark, crumbling cliff, no escape on either side, no sun in the sky, and the sounds of predatory animals filling the air. Trapped and lost in the mountains; fitting for a non-native passing through the earth country.
